Broken PTO shaft on Fail Mower

I used my alamo Flail mower for the first time today and after about 1/2 hr of operation I was going up hill and heard a noise and looked back and PTO shaft was broken. It looked the shaft twisted until it broke. There was nothing caught on the drum and the gear box I can still turn. This Flail mower was 10 yrs old but never been used. Is it possible that this shaft was not the right shaft for this unit. Thanks

I've had the univeral joint break on a brand new pto shaft, but never seen the shaft twist.
Is it possible the two peices came apart ? Any chance one of the U joints bound up?

Did you check the PTO shaft length before you used it.I am wondering if the pto shaft wasn't to long and when you went up the hill it bottomed out the shaft causing it to bend. This is better than breaking the tractor.

It wasn't to long because it needed to telescope out to make connection. The U joints seem to be very sturdy.The shaft between seems thin to me compared to U joints. Thanks

If you twisted a PTO shaft that means the PTO shaft gave you everything it had to offer. I would take a hard look at the flail.

Agreed......... your belts should have failed first.........

Look close. is everything matched up properly HP wise?

The Flail is an Alamo T-60 and my tractor is a Kubota L-39. If the belt was too tight could this have caused this. Before I got started I put the belt on and set the tension which I thought was good but when I went to put the cover over the belt and pully assembly the idler pully was hitting the cover so I had to tighten the belt some more to get cover on. Thanks

In my Canimex PTO Shaft manual, it says that a telescopic tube failure or twisting is caused by extreame torque peak or shock load or short tube engagement.
One of the cures is to possibly change to a larger PTO size.

HOW DOES THE CUTTERSHAFT SPIN FREELY, ARE THE BEARINGS GREASED?

I just got email from Dealer and they said they gave me the wrong shaft and going to replace it. Thanks for eveyone's responces.
