Broken Hydro Fan on Kubota BX 22

While working around some brush I got a stick stuck up into the Hydro Fan and broke off 3 wings. ( /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gifMade an aweful noise when it happened /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif) Dealer says while the fan is cheap, its a 4 hour job to replace it at $75/hour because its tied into the drive shaft?. Does this sound right and what do you think my options are? Also, are there any add ons to protect the fan better than whats there?...its pretty wide open.

I just replaced the hydro fan on my neighbors BX this weekend. I would say the job could be done in an hour if one had done a few, which I'm sure any dealer has. Maybe I just know a few shortcuts since I've had my BX apart a few times for fuel tank problems. Basically the floorpan just has to be removed, then the rear driveshaft coupling disassembled, and then remove the hub from the hydro pump and switch the fan.

I would say from what has been previously posted in the past in the Kubota forums that the job shouldn't take more than two hours for the inexperienced. Once you do it, you will know how to do it again if it ever happens again. If you have basic mechanical abilities, the try it yourself and save the $300. If you don't, then I would check some other dealers to see what they charge. You might even consider a local mechanic that might do this. Even though it is a tractor, there are no specialized tools needed and the principle is the same as on a car. Even a local lawn mower place should be able to handle this job. I can recommend City Power on RT 20 in Charlton MA. I know that he does superb work and is very reasonable. Just bring the part with you to make it easy for them to replace. It is the chasing around for parts that makes a lot of places not want to do work on tractors that they don't sell the brand.
