Didn't see a better forum for posting this so here goes...

It's a model # CGP-18B wall heater unit. Part number for the glass is 098260-10. From what I can find - no one has the glass since DESA went out of business in 2008. My first question is, do I need to replace it? Surely it's there for a reason. My second question is, can I use another material (metal for example). I'm sure someone on here has dealt with this before. Thanks for the help.

I looked at the drawing, DO NOT USE METAL. It will overheat all the other stuff in the heater, and trap heat and set your wall on fire. As a radiant heater, I think that the glass is there to keep things like pet hair, and dust from smoking when it comes in contact with the heater surface, and drafts from blowing it out on some areas of the surface. If its just cracked, let it go, it's non vented so wont expose you to more CO. You might be able to take the frame to a glass dealer, and he can cut a piece, and have it heat tempered to replace the broke piece.

That is known as a blue flame heater. If you can't get glass to replace the broken glass. Buy another heater and get rid (throw away) the old heater

I would replace the glass, if it is less expensive than replacing the heater, and if the heater is still safe. If it is lacking some of the safety features of the newer heaters like low oxygen shut off, then it is worth the investment if you can afford it. I found a site that will mail you replacement tempered glass made for wood stoves, and it looks like the cut it for you to your measurements: Ceramic Wood, Pellet, and Coal Stove Glass - High Temperature

I have an Empire 30K blue flame ventless that I recently used to help reheat the house each morning after loosing power for four days. When I first got it, the glass was cracked right out of the box. They sent me a new one... Seems to me that it is not just tempered glass... it was high quartz, low quartz... or high/low something... been nine years. I really like the blue flame heaters for backup heat... but don't know if I would want to leave one on whilst I slept... :)

What I was thinking while reading the thread, ditto what Mitch said. You may be able to find some heat tape for a temporary fix, similar to what you would use on a stove pipe, but that would look bad. I know tempered heat glass has to be ordered to size since it is so difficult to cut. I'd consider ease of installation along with the cost o glass vs. a whole new unit as the guys have mentioned.

Probably silica glass, it's what they use to make glass lab test tubes etc. from. Pyrex kitchen bowls that are oven safe are made from similar glass.
