Right where it's welded!... This is the ''lift cylinder'' on a JD 47 Backhoe!!:)

I was digging today and the BH boom was straight down as far as it would reach... All I was doing was getting the loose dirt out of the hole that was next to the corner... Then BANG it broke right in the weld!

Had a time getting the boom back up out of the hole... Had to get a small Mahindra help lift it back up!!..That really hurt!!!:laughing::D

OK... I can weld any kind of metal and I do a lot of welding!... But I've never welded a rod of a cylinder!

Can anyone give me some tips on what I need to do ??

I know I need to ''protect'' the cylinder rod, and try not to get it real hot because I could mess up the ''packing''.... Right ??

I plan to put ''duct-tape'' on the rod, and I believe I should put some ''wet rags'' on the rod too... Would that help ??

Any help would be appreciated!!!:)

Here's some pictures.... I won't have time to weld it until tomorrow evening, and I'll check back on the thread for any advice!

Thanks!

Bill

that is a easy weld.to far away to hurt the packing through heat.cover the rod good to keep burrs off.7018 would be a good rod to use.

You mentioned using duct tape on the rod to protect it. But why not just wrap the rod and clevis up with duct tape. After all it fixes everything.

Nah I'm just joking of course. I've never welded a cylinder rod before either so will be watching this thread in case I ever need to weld one up.

I know how that feels. I once had to use my 1992 Chevy pickup to tow an old 70 something tow truck about 2 blocks as I ran out of gasoline in the tow truck. :ashamed:

Imagine that. The little 1/2 ton Chevy had to pull the 1 ton Ford TOW Truck. You would think it would be the other way around. lol

And I had no one else around to guide the tow truck and it was slow going those 2 blocks as the truck wanted to wander around and slam into the back of me. That was a fun time.

Looks like the weld had very little penetration. Check out your other cylinders.

Extend the rod out as far as possible to get away from the seal on the cylinder. wrap a couple of damp shop towels around rod. 7018 welding rod has held for 10+ years on my backhoe. No leaks either. Welded while still on machine.

This will be my first time welding one, and it does look like an easy weld!... I'll protect the rod real good!

Thanks!

I've noticed several cylinders while greasing that looked like they didn't have enough weld on them!... Especially the cylinder that curls the BH bucket!

Thanks!

After I got the cylinder out.. I left the hoses hooked up so I could extend the rod out as far as it would go!... OK, I'll use some damp rags to wrap the rod, I thought that may work to help keep it cool!

I'll use a 7018 since you and ''cowski'' both mentioned it!:)

Glad to hear that you welded a cylinder rod and it has held for 10+ years without any problems!... Did yours break at the end like mine did ??

I couldn't leave the cylinder on the BH and weld this one, Because I wouldn't be able to go all the way around the rod to get a good weld... This ''lift cylinder'' mounts ''inside'' the BH boom!

Thanks everyone for the replies!!!... I really appreciate it!:)

That chamfer on the end of the rod is where the first weld pass is supposed to be to get good penetration to rod and eye. Then build up from there. Do not quench or try to cool it down when done. Let it cool naturally or even better set it out in the sun to slow cooling process.

Thanks very much for the info'!!!

No, I wasn't going to try to cool it down ''after'' I welded it!... I don't need the Backhoe right now, So I have plenty of time!:)

Thanks!:)

Got it welded this evening!... That was easy to weld being my first one!!!:)... I spent more time grinding the old weld off!... I looked the old weld over real good this evening, and it didn't have enough weld on the part where the pin goes!... Looked like a robot weld to me!:)

I had to remove the duct-tape that I put near the end, Because it was melting and would really make a mess!.... I just used several wet rags to wrap the rod with... I also would let it cool down some instead of welding the whole thing without stopping!

I didn't put it back on the BH because I have my log-hitch on, and I don't need the hoe right now... I'll mount the BH in a couple days and put it through a test!:)

I appreciate the replies!!!

I would send pictures and a stern letter to JD. That's poor welding. More what I would expect from a jr high shop class than a top tier company!
