Ok, here's my problem......I am terrible at remembering to add salt to the water softener brine tank. I usually end up going a couple of weeks with it completely out of salt, with all the results....iron stains on the sinks, shower, laundry, dishes, etc.

Can anyone think of a reason why I can't add a couple of 55 gallon plastic barrels to the brine tank, with them all piped together to form one large tank? This would allow me to purchase an entire pallet of salt, and a good 4-6 months between refills.

I guess it is really just a mental block that I have, and I can't get on a good schedule to top off the brine tank every couple weeks.

should work..how much salt are you using?? my softener has an adjustment to change how much salt is used each time it backflushes, i try to keep it as low as possible and still do the job

Check with your water softener supplier. Around here, they have automatic deliver and fill service for a very reasonable fee -- not much more than the retail cost of the salt. My daughter has the service, and it also includes changing of filters and minor trouble shooting. When we move out there and away from our present city water, we'll use the same service.

I used to use the service on a rental house because I could never depend on the tenants to keep the tank filled.
