Briggs and Stratton Engine identification

Hi All,
I need help identifying the Briggs and Stratton engine on a vintage Savage arms push mower model 31T, type 561. I can't seem to find any numbers on the cowl or the block. Any help would be appreciated!

Typically the engine identification on B&S engines is on the fan shroud.

Can you post a photo of your mower.

Should be stamped into the blower housing above the spark plug,, but there are a few that were stamped on the side of the housing. May need to do some scrapping because sometimes the paint will obscure the numbers.

6 cubic inch plain bearing vertical shaft, typical L head mower engine used for ages.

Take the shroud/cowling off. As someone posted above, the model, type and serial number were typically stamped into it, right above the spark plug. Use something to get the paint off so you can see the numbers.

Good luck finding carb parts for that. Seeing a bowl carb on a small B&S like that is pretty unusual. I'm guessing that engine dates back to the 50's or early 60's. Starting in the early-mid 60's, B&S was using a diaphragm carb on those engines. That type of carb mounted directly on top of the fuel tank with intake tubes going into the tank.
