Bread and Milk sold out

Excellent post, me and the wife could live for a month or more on stuff we have in the freezer and shelves. why do people get do hyper over a few ins of snow?

I think here in the states the majority of people have no confidence or know how to fend for them selfs.(Katrina) I alway chuckle when we have a "storm" coming and see people getting bread and milk.. I'm guessing they must have gallons of peanutbutter and jelly then. I've been stranded in my house without electricity for 3 days before. Kerosene heater and gas stove and I was set. I think the most difficult part was reading by flash light.

not gallons of those 2 but we generally have at any given time about 2 lbs of margarine and 3 lbs of butter. (butter in the freezer) And depending on what time of year, 2 qarts to 1+ gallons of honey.

but i dont generally buy bread... i make it so my 25lb bag of flower from costco will last me a while (currently at about 12 lbs) not counting the 2 5lb bags of wheat flower or 5lbs of rhy.

my half a cow in the freezer is down to about a 1/4 but it took the 2 of us about 4 months to eat half... so im good on all things beef....

The girls keep us in good supply with eggs.

So really the only thing we would HAVE To have the store would be milk. But in extended oh-sh time id just hike down the road to the guy who keeps dairy cows and we would trade some eggs etc for milk....

Makes you wonder what else besides bread and milk those folks eat and drink, doesn't it? I mean, heck. My wife and I go grocery shopping once a week. We buy one loaf of bread for the kids' school lunches and two gallons of milk each week. In the worst case scenario, if we got snowed in for three or four days, we would be without bread and milk for three or four days... so what? Drink some water (or beer), or make coffee or tea, and bake some bread or cookies in the oven!

We have a bread maker, too and flour and sugar and yeast in the cupboard if we get desperate. We also usually have about 10-20 cans of soup, some rice, potatoes, fruit, etc... and a bunch of stuff in the freezer, too. Good grief how these folks panic. Its not like any of them are going to starve to death in those few days, either.

::D We keep a bunch of milkmakers at the barn:D

"I think here in the states the majority of people have no confidence or know how to fend for them selfs.(Katrina)".

Well, not to get too dang defensive, but it is relatively hard to fend for you & yours with 8 ft. of water in your house. If you want to slam the residents of New Orleans, it should be for not evacuating when the city was under a mandatory evacuation order. I lost the metal off my roof & lived without power for a month after the storm & figure we fended pretty wel considering we lost all our food in the freezer. We didn't flood as we live a whopping 150' above sea level & ~~40 miles north of NO.

Geez, hope this doesn't lead to another long thread on Katrina.

Snow forcasts do sound like they generate the same consumer behavior as hurricane forecasts - - milk, water, bread, luncheon meat, etc. fly off the counters.

Stocking up on Milk? Bread?

Those are NOT necessities.

BEER on the other hand is a necessity of life. THAT is what I stock up on. :D:D:D:D:D:D:D After all beer is just liquid bread! :D Tis hard to spread jam and butter on beer though.:)

Didn't mean step on anyones toes Jack. But, you took the necessary precautions and fended for yourself. Like you said there were far too many people who chose to ignore the warning and then expected someone to come along and make everything right. If I screw up, it's my doing and I'll fix it.
