I am helping a guy out with a 4020, when he was running it the coolant drain line got ripped off and he lost his coolant after he found it he fixed the line and filled with coolant, started and ran found that there was white smoke. I took the head off and found that the head was cracked at the #2 cylinder, Looking at the head gasket I can see no bad spots but all 3 pistons had some coolant in mostly #2. I cleaned the block with a rag and see no cracks and rolled the engine over and wipped down the liners and pistons. See no other cracks. Anything else I should check? Also is there anywhere online that I can look at torque specs, timing, valve setting, and componet replacing of head parts? thanks.

I looked in my manual some time back and I do not recall if valve lash is in the manual. I'm not sure if I observed the torque amount but I do know that I did not see the torque sequence. I also looked to see if the heads required re-torquing and couldn't find any information until recently when I found out that the head bolts are reusable since they are not stretch bolts, therefore they require a maintenance interval to reset the torque. I just made a note to help me to remember to check for this information tonight for you unless someone beats me to it.

(edit) I'm wondering if the lack of torquing the head may have contributed to this since you had fluid in 3 cyl's. Is the 4020 turbo charged? Are you sure its not the swirl chamber plug that is cracked?

Well, I told you wrong. According to my manual for (3T84C-ATC) (3520)

Cylinder head bolts: 20kg-m (144.6 ft #) coated with oil and tighten to standard torque (all conversions are mine)

Connecting Rods: 6.5kg-m (47.01 # )

"Quote: Clearance of intake and exhaust valve 0.2 " (MM? NOT CLEAR)

Perhaps a phone call to Branson is needed to verify these figures.

thanks for the info. The head is definatley cracked possibly 2 cracks. it had been ran a while with no coolant and got real hot. When we order the parts we will check with the dealer on torque and setting info then. I will try to remember to post the info.
