I have a leak coming from an o ring at an elbow joint in the power steering assembly. It should be an easy fix, but I can't seem to figure out how to remove the elbow without removing the whole assembly. The elbow can't turn to loosen without hitting the cylinder one way and the axel turning the other way. Any tricks or advice?

Can you share a picture?

If it's like mine, I'm pretty sure the end cap of the cylinder has to come out or at least slide out so the fitting can spin around, but I need to double check that on mine.

Thanks. One problem is it hits the cylinder on one side and the axel on the other side.

I was kinda afraid that it would be the case. Pretty much have to pull the entire cylinder apart because of the fitting. A banjo fitting would be a much better solution.

Anyway, any chance that the new o-ring would expand enough to go over the fitting?

Could you cut it off and then use a connection that's not right-angle; make up the 90° further away from the cylinder (not sure if possible; longer hose with a bend, or possibly a short section of hose + a 90° fitting to the current section of hose)?

Definitely doable. Replace it with a straight male-male fitting, then a 90 degree fitting with a swivel. Might need an extension fitting or whatever they call it to push the 90 degree elbow further out.

Or something like this, with an elbow.

I have cut off the elbow and was able to remove it and plan to replace with a male-to-male and a 45 or 90 swivel elbow. I took it to a small hydraulics shop and they thought it was a British #4 that screws into the power steering assembly and a JIC #6 that screws into the power steering hose. The Briish #4 seems to work, but it is not a JIC #6 as it would not screw into the female hose connector. I think it could be a JIS #6 or a Komatsu speciality fitting. Any suggestions? I am going to try to go to a larger hydraulics shop to se if they have the right fittings.

Yes, the fittings are JIS which has the same thread as the BSPP fittings and technically interchange when sealing a fitting to a port. However, then sealing a fitting to the hose, they have the opposite taper of each other.

I found a good hydraulic shop that was able to build me a custom hose to fix the problem. If you have a similiar issue and are in the Northern Alabama area, I highly recommend reaching out to Waters Edge Hydraulic 256 656 8912
