I may end up buying new if I can't find used so what are the brands that are solid but won't break the bank. I need a 5 or 6 foot box blade and a 5 foot RC.

You will need to call around to first find out what brands are available to you and then start sorting through those. To get something that is not going to "break the bank" you will need to by good name brand used equipment or really research and get an off brand new equipment. Most off brand or small equipment companies don't have a large selling area so that is why you need to see what is available. Since you are in KY you might could see if anyone carries Kodiak equipment. When I was comparing specs they seemed to have some decent equipment at good prices.

I like the Woods and Bush Hog Brands. Keep in mind that most equipment makers have different classes of Box Blades and Rotary Cutters. So with any given brand you can spend a lot or you can spend a lot more. :D
You didn't mention what your intended use is going to be so its kind of hard to recomend anything.

I plug for KingKutter brand here, TSC should stock their stuff. Over a periond of five years I've owned and used a 6' rake a 6' box blade, a 7' pro series rear blade and a 6-1/2' disc and have good luck with all. I've only read about the KK tillers and they seemed to get good reviews on their performance. bjr

Land Pride makes an outstanding line of products for the money. Bush Hog and Woods also have very good reputations.

I know these brands are top notch but don't they end up being a bit more expensive than some less known brands?

Yeah, Land Pride, Bush Hog and Woods do cost a little more but not as much as you may think. The quality makes up for the difference in cost by far, and then some. Bottom line..........you get what you pay for. But, with that being said, I've also owned a few HOWSE brand implements and never had any problems at all with them.

I have a Frontier 4'. I got it with my tractor at the JD dealer. At the time I was a complete tractor newbie, never owned or operated any of this type of equipment, but am generally familiar with machinery and what is built heavy or wimpy.

That said, the Fontier seems heavily built when comparing the thickness of steel used and the weight of the thing. I figured it would be indestructable for my my use. However that has not been completely true! I've bent the main body on stumps, I've bent the blade carriage, I've bent the 3pt hitch pin bracket. I'm really glad I didn't buy a light-weight brand.

I'm not using it for mowing field grass. It's being used off-road, in the woods, thru the ditches, pushing over saplings with the FEL, then grinding them up with the RC and stuff like that. Lot's of rocks and hidden stuff to run over.

So, just consider your use before you decide how much you want to spend.

Sounds like standard duty for a bush hog. Which reminds me I need to call about new blades for mine. :D
