Tractor
Massey Ferguson GC2300
I recently bought a MF GC2300 with only 112 hours on it. It has wet disc brakes (which I am not familiar with) and they are barely working. They will hold the tractor on a hill, but if I have it in gear it is very, very easy to move forward even while pushing down hard on the brake pedal. I have no idea how these wet disc brakes work or what the problem might be. Any ideas?

sounds like they are working normally.

Why would you want to push on the brake and "go" pedal at the same time????
Keep it up and you will have no brakes, kind of like driving your car/truck with the parking brake on all the time!

On the 2007 GC2300 it is very easy to put some pressure on the "go" pedal while stepping on the brake. Even with the brake pedal fully depressed, the slightest pressure on the "go" pedal makes the tractor move forward. If that's working normally, then I have to live with it. But my guess is the brake would not hold the tractor on a fairly steep incline.

You will be able to drive the tractor with the brake set. But, it should also hold the tractor when parked, no matter what.

The brake pedal should have 1 inch, + or - 1/8 inch, of free-play in it. There are turnbuckles to adjust it, on the linkages.

If someone drove it with the parking brake set habitually, or for a really extended period, it is possible they are damaged. If so, yours would be the first one I have heard about.

Your brakes are working as designed...don't expect to step on the brake while underway and have the rears lock up...not gonna happen. If, when parked, it holds the tractor, you are in fine working order. I don't know of anyone who has been able to "wear out" a wet disc system. I've yet to find a need to adjust the brakes on mine even though I've forgotten to release the park brake from time to time. Still do from time to time even after 6 years. If you do decide to make an adjustment to the linkages be sure to make them equally. Your best investment at this point would be, at the very least, the basic operator's manual (and read it), or, preferably, a service manual and parts manuals. Most of us would be more than happy to walk you through the procedure (quick and painless) if would give you piece of mind.

When I first got my tractor home [bougth used] it was leaking oil out of the brake rod shaft on the RH side.It also had hydro problems so while it was apart I had the rear diff out I took it all apart. There's a small o-ring inside the housing that can be only accessed from inside out.It had a small nick in it that was causing the oil to leak.Always was a mess under the tractor.Someone had tried fixing it before by putting a piece of rubber on the outside of course that didn't work. Now taking stuff apart you have to take all the brake disc and plates off,From what I could tell mine looked still like new being in oil they will last a long time. What mine do is like others you can have the pedal locked in park and if you forget that its on you can drive around that way.If you really think about it you wouldn't want to beable to have the brakes locked on and giver on your hydro foot pedal and want the tractor to not move. Can you imagine the sort of damage you could create in the driveline:eek:could get costly pretty fast.I'am sure the tractor placed in park holds it on its own.If not then linkages need adjusting.Larry

AFAIK the rocker pedal for the HST acts differently than a car's at low speeds. The less you push maximizes the torque that is delivered to the wheels.

AFAIK indicates "the slightest pressure" makes the tractor move.

On mine, it takes more than the slightest pressure, but it does not take a lot.

I guess it depends on what he considers slight.

There was one member a while ago, who did feel his brakes were not adjusted properly, and reported improvement after adjusting them.

You are correct...with an HST the amount of torque delivered is inversely proportional to the travel (or amount of pressure applied, if you will) of the treadle. It's pretty easy to "drive through" the braking system.
