I had my brakes torn down on one side of my tractor. I had a post about the brakes comeing out of ajustment. Ran out of adjustment, so I tore it down. The drum was covered in rust and brake crud. I took the wire wheel to it on the grinder to clean it up. I EmaileD Aaron and he said cause it was rough is why it chewed up my shoes. My buddies couldn't get it into the lathe but he got it ground out with the flap disk wheel. I am sure it will work as is now. So anyway to the point of this post.

While it's disassembled I noticed the seal is leaking and oil puddleing in the bottom of the housing. In the last year and a half I have been in this thing like 3 times, never once it was wet! But it started leaking sometime in the last few days?? I sprayed it out with brake cleaner and used the compressed air, so not sure if that blew crud into it or that made it leak? I think it's just a freak thing? But I am glad it did it now when I have it torn down that much and before I put in new shoes and it filled up and soaked my new shoes.

I looked through my yanmar service manual. It leaves this part out. There is 4 bolts on the housing. Do I need to remove this housing or can I pull it from the outside? Looks like I can pull it from outside. Also I do not see this part listed on Hoye's website? The seal thst is? All I see is a big or in that looks internal to the houseing, but I can see its a seal around the brake shaft clearly.

Strange thing I looked for the wheel seal to see what it looked like on the diagram. Cause I bought the wheeL seal from hoye and I clicked the diagram to find the part I was sure? But I can't even find the wheel seal in this diagram so I am not sure what the seal looks like in their diagram?

Here is a pic, you can see its wet and the seal.

Yeah I think I remember seeing somewhere you can just hack the old one out and then replace it in situ, just remember to clean everything up good before fitting the new seal and plenty of grease on the slip surfaces.

Is there up-down play in the shaft? The seal, to me, appears to be distorted, (mashed down), from a bad bearing.

I will grab and wiggle it when at the house. I don't remember play when I took the brake drum off.

Norm I see what your talking about. I am 99% sure that's just oil there and it looks like that. I am pretty sure it's still perfectly round . I think the oil on it seeping out makes it look like that.

Ha. And to think winston, I had read her write up at least once if not twice in the last
8 years. Shows I forget stuff.
I was pretty sure it looked like I could just pry it out from the outside but was just checking. I was gonna try fit anyway.
Thanks for the parts link.

I actually posted in your other thread about my problems with my brakes but this is more info. When I purchased my YM2001 the left brake was stuck and the right brake worked pretty well. When I worked on the left brake the inside was pretty rusty. I had to free up the cam and shim the pads to make it work correctly. Now the right side and remember it works pretty well. I opened the right side and fluid went everywhere. It was full of transmission fluid but no rust to be seen. Now I am thinking about messing up the seal on the left side so that it can be protected from rust. Remember that the later models have wet brakes.

I guess that I really should fix the leak.

well I am putting a new seal in the leaky side. I thought about shimming the shoes but I think like they said you can turn that upper pin and you will get maybe an 1/8'' more spread on the shoes from the looks of it. No to the vise tonight and put that plate in their to get the pin unstuck.

I grabbed the shaft the other day. And there is absolutely no play in it. It's tight as can be, I think what you saw was just the fluid making it looked like it was crushed or distorted
