Gave the JD 4100HST (115hrs) a good workout tilling up the garden and running back and forth to dump bucket loads of stones, which gave me plenty of opportunity to use the brakes. Coming to a fast stop the brakes would make a loud howling sound. My brother, a OTR driver said it sounded almost like metal on metal to him. Normal? Called the Dealer, He said it didn't sound right to him, but was unsure if it would be covered under the warranty so he didn't want to send the service tech out. I said I would trailer it over to them. He told me that wasn't necessary(?). Gave me a BS story about not needing the brakes on hydro anyway(?) Stepdad says the wetbrakes on his NH2120 make a noise too. Related that to the dealer and he replies that that sounds like metal on metal and that he should have looked at, but my JD was DIFFERENT?

Maybe a linkage adjustment is in order? Specs calls for 1.2"-1.4" pedal travel, I measured 1 1/2" before the brakes would begin to grab.

Anyone else's JD or any other tractor make a loud sound when hitting the brakes hard?

Hi ya
I take it ya brakes are still working? just got to ask have you changed your oil in the back end when this sound started? i know of a few guys who have changed oil brands or grade and there wet brakes start squeeling (kinda like anut may when she got her left t*t stuck in the ringer but thats another story:) ) dry brakes use to glaze up and make a hell of a sound but wet brakes i have never heard of many probs only the one about oil
catch ya

Update: Brake noise

JD Dealership from where tractor was purchased sent service tech out over to address problem.

Diagnosis: Brake Chatter. Breakdown of HST trans oil; additives depleted.

Solution: Drain old fluid, clean screen, replace with new fluid, (3.3 gal.) and spin-on filter to see if noise stops.

Service work performed: Drain old fluid, clean screen, No filter change,(filter not in stock) add 2 gal new Hy-gard low viscosity oil, replace difference with old fluid. No pedal travel linkage adjustment performed.

Field Test: No change

Tech feels adding an aftermarket wet brake anti chatter additive to fluid would cure problem. Though has reservations about introducing modifiers into the entire HST system.

Next Step: Dealership to contact JD support on situation.

Current Status: Factory recommended additive. On order. 8-10 days. Along with complete fluid/filter change. Also was informed some larger 4000 series tractors have experienced similar brake chatter.

jdkid, thanks for the response. Using a different brand fluid was the first thing the field tech mentioned too that could cause noise problems. A real common occurence.

My two month old TC29 had the same problem with the brakes squawling. Mentioned it to my dealer during its recent 50 hour service. He said most of the new tractors with wet brakes. are built with metal pads that press against metal disk, riding in a oil bath. His tech. then proceeded to burnish the brake pads by running it around their yard while riding the brakes. It eliminated most of the noise. They said the rest of the noise should go away after using the brakes some more.
