I want to start a garden and all I have is a box blade. I was thinking about using my scarifiers set really low to tear up the ground and then to smooth it out with the blade. This will be a really SMALL garden of maybe 50'x50'. Think it will work? The dirt is pretty soft with no rocks. It's dirt that was spread out when my pond was dug this last October.

I don't have other attachments other than a RC and PHD and I don't want to buy something for such a small area.

Thanks...

Morning Joe.
Don't see why your plan wouldn't work....I wouldn't take to much of bite the first time...maybe half...than lower settings to your wish, than after the area good and loosen half dozen or so trips around the area until smooth.

It will definitely bust up the ground. I'd spray the ground after you're done to kill all the seeds and weeds. It'll work......

not very well, it would get the sod out. look into renting a tiller for tractor or a walk behind.

I would think that it would all depent on the soil. With what I have here(coarse sandy) it would work great. I would recommend killing the grass first. My 2 cents.

I think it will work, just not great. If you have a Home Depot nearby, rent one of their tillers. It will do a much better job and probably faster. And if you can get a couple yards of compost spead before you till, even better.

You can try the scarifiers, that won't cost a thing. But if you don't have draft control, the BB might want to dig too deep. You'd have to use the position control to constantly lift it back up and start over again. I think renting a tiller might be less trying on your patience.

It should work. Basically, you want to take out the vegetation and turn it upside down.

If you're into organic gardening, you won't want to either kill the grass nor use anything on the seed.

I make raised rows in my veggie garden using opposed discs running behind the rear wheels. Maybe with so much sand, you don't need to do this.

Someone ought to make rotary plows for CUTs. Could easily put 2 Gravely type rotary plows behind most 18-23 hp CUTs. They'd be a lot better than a rototiller or moldboard for breaking lots of ground with a CUT. Problem with most plows is you don't need them after the first time, as long as you don't let weeds come in and take over.

You don't need draft control to limit the depth of an implement. Do you think without draft control you have the implement up or down, with no in
Between. You've been listening to salesmen to much. Draft control is a convenience not a necessity for any impliment use.

Just drop it to the depth you want and move the lever back to center. You can still set the depth to where you want it you just need to look behind you to see what depth it's set at.
