My rule of thumb is to just cover the tires and a little more. Any more is too big and less is too small. It seems to work out perfectly with the weight and manuevering.
Hey Arky - I also have a L3400 HST and it has a 60 inch box blade. It is just a bit wider then the tires which is good because it covers the tire tracks. When it is full of red dirt (NC) the machine seems to handle it most of the time. I have bogged the tractor down a time or two with it. Also the size is good because if the tractor fits through something the blade will follow. I would be afraid of catching the wider blade on something. I think the 60 inch blade is also recommended for this size tractor.
My L34oo has the R4 tires. I had a 5' box blade, and it would not cover the tracks that the R4s made. I went to a 6' and have not had any trouble with it. I also run a 6' brush hog and landscaping rake. You just need to remember that your implement is wider than your tractor.
I use a Woods GB60/60" with R4's and it covers the tracks well, unless I'm trying for a 60" trench and the sides start spilling in. I couldn't be happier with my choice, I've excavated over 200 cubic yards, half of it driveway stone imbedded and packed in clay and it is still only shows slight wear.
I never wanted for anything larger but can imagine a larger blade bogging the machine down with heavy use.

I have a 66" on mine and it works fine. I have a "United" brand bb, and I added about 180 lbs. to it which helped tremendously with "digging in"... I have had no problems with it bogging the tractor down, even when the box is full while pulling. I would not hesitate to put a 6' bb on... the used 5 1/2' that I found was just a great deal.
