Bought 20 Cows Sat, Drought Sale

There were 50 in the group and we bought 20 of the best. The are black and weigh 1200 avg. 4-6 yrs old, due to calve in early spring. Paid $890 each average. This is the driest Fall that I can ever remember. Lots of cattle farmers are not going to have enough hay to feed through the winter and neighbors have no extra hay to buy. Ken Sweet

Wow! Great prices! Wished it wasn't due it draught though. I guess you've got plenty of hay for the winter. Your sale of those calves was pretty good as well. Looks like a blessed year so far.

Friend works for a company that a side product is cow feed. They have buyers, but due to HIGH output of the milkcows, the dairy elected not to change them over to the winter feed. Another ranger got a call to "come here" and was given the whole lot. He won't have to worry about his cows going hungry. If it wasn't so far, I would have hauled some to my Dad.

We did do well with the Cattle this year, Thanks to the great management of my Son. Yes, the Cattle we bought Sat. were drought sales. We had a excellent first cutting this spring and will have enough to get 70 mama cows and the bulls and the babies that need to be carried thru winter. We are truly Blessed every Day. Ken Sweet

I saw on the news this evening that we are 17 inches behind on rainfall. I've been feeding my cows for a month now. No pasture grass to speak of but the cows are staying in good shape. I'm trying to hold off feeding my hay until late November. If we had some ground moisture I'd try planting some ryegrass or oats for some winter grazing but nothing would come up if I planted it.
We had an extremely wet winter last year followed by a late cold spring. Slow start to hay season and very little grazing early. I knew it would turn off dry this summer.

My Grandfather in law in west central Nebraska got excellent rain fall this year. His hay groud is around his private lake (pond) and lost approx 30 acres of hay ground due to lake growing larger. He still got more hay than he normally gets. The neighbor next to him was dropping large round bales every 150ft. They were averaging 1500#+ and they were grass bales.
