Whats is the differences between bottom plows and middle busters, and their differant uses?

So would a middle buster work for converting a old cow pasture in to a garden spot?

Sure it would. The bigger the garden the longer the middle buster would take to get it plowed up. Of course, then it has to be disc and/or tilled to make it useable as a garden.

I have only the middle buster plow. It is NOT a turning plow and I would have liked to have had one, but I didn't. But don't let that stop you from putting in a large garden. It'll work, yes indeed, it'll work.

Plus, a middle buster plow is great for laying rows, into which you can roll an earthway type planter, throw down seed by hand, or toss in potatoes.

I'm hard pressed to believe the soil is worked any where near enough to seed into with an earthway planter after a middle buster has gone through it. Possibly in some perfect preworked loam but most of us aren't living in that dream land. A middle buster is a rough first level tool that needs lots of after working to properly cultivate a seed or planting bed.

Didn't mean leave the impression that the MB would do ALL the work of soil prep. Thought I mentioned post plowing work with disc, maybe not. I disk and then use a C tine either off my 3 pt or pull a C tine drag. Nonetheless, yes, we do indeed use the MB to trench in a row for the earthway planter, which was the point of mentioning it.. YMMV.

Thanks. To be clear, I was merely offering some other potential uses for the middle buster. I'd love to have a conventional plow, but at this point, between the MB, followed by the disk and the field cultivator, I'm pleased enough with the results.

Yes, our soil is nothing but sandy up here. Still, the ability to turn over green manure? You cannot beat a plow that turns it over, not just "divide" it the way a MB does. I just don't have one, but we always used them on the farms down in Bay County and yes, on our place in BC. Go Lancers. :laughing:
