It was first recommended that I use a 2" cylinder for a side link on my B1700...but after looking at a lot of sidelink applications it appears that most of them seem bigger than 2"

I have a couple of implements that are right at the upper end of the weight limits recommended by Kubota for this tractor (maybe even a little heavier then recommended)...

What is the consensus on a little beefier sidelink? is it necessary?

According to TractorData.com your 3pt hitch can lift 1280#.

A 2" cylinder at your system pressure which is ??? can lift ___. I'll use 2250 psi which is what my L235 hydraulic pressure is.
Area of 2" cylinder is 3.14 sq in. Force is 3.14 times 2250 = a little over 3 tons  Be careful you don't bend anything! A system pressure of around 400 psi would produce about 1200# and I'm sure your pressure is more than that.

I think you'll find that 2" cylinders are pretty easy to find and relatively inexpensive. Smaller diameter ones not so much.

/pine, what tractor do you have? Sorry but I have forgotten and you don't have it listed with your profile. I make hydraulic top & side links for some extra $$$ and I usually try and match the diameter size of the cylinder to the diameter size of the FEL lift cylinders. Normally anything under 40hp will get a 2"cylinder, 40hp-55hp gets a 2 1/2" cylinder and 60hp and up usually gets a 3" cylinder. From what I've seen, John Deere uses 3" cylinders on all their "TnT" sets that they manufacturer, but I may be wrong with that assumption.

What have you seen the bigger cylinders on? I think that there have been a few guys on TBN that have made their own links and have used bigger cylinders for whatever reason. On my 3215 I used 2" and on my 7520 I used 3". These have worked out very well for me.

Thanks for the reply...

I'm not as concerned about the lifting power of the cylinder as I am about the (possible) abuse the rod may take...especially when one of the heavier attachments is connected...

The cylinders that I use have 1 1/4" rods on the 2" cylinders and 1 1/2" rods on the 2 1/2" & 3" cylinders. These are plenty strong enough. How big are the rods on your stock OEM side links? I don't think that a rod on a hydraulic needs to be any bigger that those to have enough strength for whatever tractor & hitch that you may have.

Thanks for the valuable information...
...my concern is/was about what I have been used to putting my hitch arms through...I normally knock them off attachment pins with a good swift kick...the solid sidelink is only about 3/4 rod but I was thinking that the rod in the cylinder was a little more vulnerable...

just curious...what do you think of using this cylinder....(I will probably go with a 1-1/2 rod) but I'm curious if you think this cylinder would be OK to re-configure with lift arm ends ?

Richard, what tractor do you have that you want to put this on?

MVR,
I don't want to hijack this thread, but I'm interested in tilt for my m8540. Have you ever built one? Are you able to retain the factory float option at the bottom of the side links?PM me.
Thanks

B1700D, FEL, gear
TractorData.com Kubota B1700 tractor information

bear in mind that I have a 7' rear scrape blade that is really too big (heavy)for my tractor but I use it very judiciously and other than a bigger tractor nothing else will do what this brute does...I also have an appropriately sized box blade.

Also and maybe more importantly...I recently bought an older 7' sickle bar mower that just like the scrape blade (both Massey Ferguson BTW) is maxing out the tractor's 3ph capabilities...but both work exceptionally well even at the retarded pace I use them at...

Or another questions, Why are the side links $250??? I would like one but this seems a bit high.

I can weld and would like a cheaper option, I would re-use the Parts off the solid brace but with which cylinder?

Also, if strength is a problem, could I use the side link to *only* lift one side of the box blade for tilting (instead of putting down pressure on the other.)

PS. If this is hijacking - send me a PM and I can start another thread... I think we are working towards a common goal, Just let me know since I can delete this thread for 24 hours. ;)
