I only had this happen once, about 20 years ago; but it still applies, especially for those of us with gear tractors. I killed the battery in my 1984 F150, manual transmission. For some reason the starter solenoid stuck closed andwhen I hooked up the cables the starter engaged. Luckily I had left it in neutral or I'd have been smashed between the two bumpers.
While it goes against my instincts to park in neutral, I now make sure the brake is set, wheels trigged, and all fingers are free of the fan before I make my last connection.

I had an old Allis chalmers{and other equipment} most of the time it had to be started while standing in front of the rear tire. I quess I learned early on with old style machinery, nothing beats common sense. How many can remember the old hand crank engines busting someones arm?

had a crank come off hit my chin. Chipped teeth and cut lip.:D

Used to be we usually had a team of horses in front of the tractor when the battery was dead.:D
