Unfortunately, the family farm a lot of us grew up on is a thing of the past.

I disagree with that. The family farm is plentiful around here. The problem is few are willng to make the sacrifice it takes to make it happen.

Probably because the price our farmers are paid for their milk is based on the Wisconsin market. We were getting over $18 a hundred in 1984 and around $12 today. You tell me how they can survive around here.

And you get paid more then we do.

Nobody is getting $12 today unless possibly if they are on grade B which if that is the case they deserve to fail.

Th family farm is plentiful but few are willing to make it happen....seems somewhat contradictory.

You are right.

I should have said that if they are not plentiful in that area then few must be willing to make the sacrifice.

Wow, you seem to know a lot about the dairy industry here in northeast Pa.

For much of last year, you were below $12 a hundred.
Monthly Data - All Milk Price

Prices are still infinitely below what we were getting in 1984. Adjust for inflation and dairy farming would be profitable again.

Notice I said TODAY.

"Much of last year" was 6 months. Plus that was base. Any dairy worth there salt would get a good amount more than that for premiums.

Milk was $20 not to long ago. You have to take the good with the bad.

You should look back through those charts.

Milk barely broke $14 in the 80's.

"Family farmers are being forced out of business at an alarming rate. According to Farm Aid, every week 330 farmers leave their land.i As a result, there are now nearly five million fewer farms in the U.S. than there were in the 1930's.ii Of the two million remaining farms, only 565,000 are family operations.iii"
