Bogus Recall Letter

Hi All - I just wanted to briefly relate what I received in the mail last week. I received a letter from John Deere regarding a serious hydraulic flaw that rendered the tractor dangerous and unusable. They were repairing these units - but were asking that the customer pay $500 towards the cost of the repair to offset their losses.

I smelled a skunk. I have friends (& family) who pull stunts like this on each other... I've done a few myself - but we always watch the other guy spin for a day or two, then fess up to the joke. Not this time - nobody is claiming it. So I finally called the Deere dealer near me and described it to them... Matt wasn't amused. Now they want a copy of it to begin a fraud investigation...! They're afraid someone is trying to use their corporate name to gather funds illegally. If it's a scam it's not a good one - but just to be sure I guess I'll drop a copy off with them.

That would be a federal offense (wire fraud) to anyone who might be trying to pull a scam using the postal system. In general, federal penalties tend to be much worse.

My dealer didn't seem too amused either. That's why I was hoping someone I know would claim it as theirs... we laugh and it's over. I'm concerned though if this is a scam, there might be others going out.

We get scams at work here all the time - some new "charity" needing you to call - when you call them, your number (or in the case of our work phones, the long distance service) gets charged an outrageous long distance fee.

Oh well - Hopfully I can get it on here tonight so you guys can see some of it.
