Just got this email...wondering if it is true.
Have you seen this one yet???

He was out deer hunting last week when a large grizzly bear charged him from about 50 yards away. The guy emptied his 7mm Magnum semi-automatic rifle into the bear and it dropped a few feet from him. The big bear was still alive so he reloaded and shot it several times in the head.

The bear was just over one thousand six hundred pounds.

It stood 12' 6" high at the shoulder, 14' to the top of his head. It's the largest grizzly bear ever recorded in the world.

Of course, the Alaska Fish and Wildlife Commission did not let him keep it as a trophy, but the bear will be stuffed and mounted, and placed on display at the Anchorage airport to remind tourists of the risks involved when in the wild.

Based on the contents of the bears stomach, the Fish and Wildlife Commission established the bear had killed at least two humans in the past 72 hours including a missing hiker.

The US Forest Service, backtracking from where the bear had originated, found the hiker's 38-caliber pistol emptied. Not far from the pistol were the remains of the hiker. The other body has not been found.

Although the hiker fired six shots and managed to hit the grizzly with four shots (the Service ultimately found four 38 caliber slugs along with twelve 7mm slugs inside the bear's dead body), it only wounded the bear and probably angered it immensely.

The bear killed the hiker an estimated two days prior to the bear's own death by the gun of the Forest Service worker.

Think about this:
If you are an average size man; You would be level with the bear's navel when he stood upright. The bear would look you in the eye when it walked on all fours! To give additional perspective, consider that this particular bear, standing on its hind legs, could walk up to an average single story house and look over the roof, or walk up to a two story house and look in the bedroom windows.

One more pic...I question this for a couple reasons. If the gentleman is a legitimate hunter carrying a 7MM Mag, there should only be a couple shots, one if he is good. Maybe he was panicked, under attack. Second, a bear this big must have been seen by someone yet the first time we hear about it is when some yahoo kills it?? If it is factual, that is amazing. If not, it still makes a neat campfire story! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Kinda like those fish stories...the 2lb bass gets bigger every time the story is told!

Last year when this picture was floating around, the bear was much smaller. I also don't remember it having just killed two people either.

14 feet tall is well above the rediculous point. Bear hides are measured along two points. The hide is first skinned and stretched out. Then you measue from nose to tail and from the tips of the front paws. Add both measurments and devide by two. This is the number used when measureing the size of a bear.

Nine feet is really good. Ten foot is absolutely amazing. Eleven feet have happened, but it's so rare as to be just about impossible. A hunt for a bear in an area that has produced a ten foot bear will cost around $15,000.

Fourteen feet is just silly.

Bears in the record books are measured by the the size of their skull. Length plus width. A buddy of mine that I grew up with has the Archery world record black bear. I un-officially measured it right after he brought it home. He had no idea how big it was. It scored 23 3/16 inches. It's also number three in the Boone and Crocket book, which is for rifle kills.

The largest Brown Bear ever killed and entered in the record book scored 30 12/16 inches and was killed in 1952.

There is no record for how many feet a bear's hide is because it's too easy to stretch it out for a larger score. They also shrink over time.

I think it killed General Ringwald and Ted Nugent and serioiusly injured George Carlin. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Chuck Norris killed this bear with one swift round-house kick to the fore-head!! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Nah, you're all wrong. The bear posted this picture on the 'net to throw us all off his trail. He had the photo taken with a human accomplice. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Many many years ago in the late 60's or early 70's I read in article in (I think) Western Outdoors. It was about a woman trapper somewhere in the West around the 1950's or so. She was checking her traps and carried a .22 semi-auto rifle to dispose of any critters caught in her traps that were not dead.

Upon reaching one of the traps, a huge Grizzly stood up behind a bush. She emtied the .22 into it's skull and killed it. Turns out they found like 12 holes in it's skull. The story said the bear was a Plains Grizzly, thought to be extinct in recent past when the Buffalo ran out. That was their main prey. This bear then was one of the largest ever taken. The Plains Grizzly was common around the Los Angeles area about 10,000 years ago and several species are shown at the La Brea Tar Pits. They were able to kill giant ground sloths, large bison and even small mammoths or mastodons. Just about anything they wanted to eat.

I'm wondering if that isn't the same bear you you mentioned, Eddie? It would interesting to find out, assuming the article was true.

I'm not familiar with the story of the woman and the .22, but there are still stories that come out from time to time about the California Grizzly. I've never heard the term Plains Grizzly, but it might be the same thing.

A few years ago a guy said he found a skull for a bear that scored big enough to be a new world record. It was examined and didn't look right. Some Uninersity in the Mid-West did a study on it and determined it was a California Grizzly skull that was at least a hundred years old.

The last one was killed in the early 1900's in Southern California. I believe it was attacking, or so it was claimed, a lady on a farm by trying to get into her home when she killed it. Not sure on this or the details.

The Brown Bear (all locations) and Grizzly Bear are identical species. No difference between them in them at all except for size. I've always read the Brown Bears are larger because of the amount of protein they get from the Salmon runs. Browns live near the coast. Grizzly Bears are in the mountains and have a harder time finding food. I've always wonderd if you took a Grizzly from the mountain and put it in a coastal area and let it live long enough, woudl it get as big as the Brown Bears?

California Grizzlies were supposed to be the largest of the bears. Bigger than Polar bears too. This is said to be from their supply of Salmon and mild winters. Mild winters allow for longer feeding tims and no hibernation.

Yeah, California or Plains Grizzly same thing, different terms. I suppose a mountain Grizzly would grow larger if exposed to a more frequent high protein diet. Like humans who are now bigger and stronger in general than in the past because of diet. I read somewhere that bears and pigs are related. The more you feed them the bigger they get (to a point) of course.

I had one of those pot bellied pigs as a pet. Her name was Betty. A really good pig and smart too. We were told to keep her around 50 lbs or so not to feed her too much or she would get too big. Of course I didn't believe it and sure enough, she ballooned up to 250 lbs. Ended up giving her to a neighbor who lived in the foothills with a ranch and she played with their pigmy goats.

What's up with these women killing these giant bears? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

This is one of those internet "legends" that will probably be around for years to come.

I remember when this happened, but the facts were far different from those claimed in the first post.

The Anchorage Daily News used to have a link on their web site to the actual event. Their web site is www.adn.com

Now that I have moved back to Texas, I don't have to worry about running into those big boys anymore /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
