I tried 3 shops for a approximate quote on painting a garden tractor that I want to fix up. Ain't gonna happen in this town. There isn't a shop that will paint over someone Else's prep work. I wanted to do my own stripping sanding and primer, but wanted a paint booth controlled color applied. No one will even touch that job around here. Any one else have ever tried to get a paint job done where they wanted to do their own prep work. This can't be a unusual request? bjr

It's largely the same around here. You need to find a small, one or two man shop that needs work.

It doesn't take long in the body business, to realize painting things that have been repaired and prepped by others, is at best a non-profit venture, at worst a money losing proposition.

Even if you manage to do their job in a reasonable amount of time, and the customer is satisfied, you still did not make what you could have made, doing a normal job in your shop.

People rarely understand what quality materials cost, or what it costs to operate a good booth. They usually don't intend to spend half of just what the materials and overhead cost, which leaves you no room for labor to start with.

I know it's difficult to understand, but that is why they won't even talk to you. Because, they have learned this the hard way.

I think you could find a shop that would do it but you're not going to like the cost or the work, one or the other.

You can have it cheap, good or quick. You pick any two.

How much are you actually saving doing the prep yourself?
