196? Bobcat 722
Hi there I'm new to this forum and really new to skid steer rebuilding. Id like to start first by saying thanks in advance. Ive been a forum moderator for many years and I know that guys rack there brains and resources to try to help others. Thank you for that.

OK so here's what i have. I have a 1963-196? Clarke Bobcat Skid-steer. It has a stock 1.6L Ford motor in it. Here it is: Ford FL98 Long Block for Bobcat Models 632 - 642 - 722 - 732 - 742 Bobcat (6565295REM). FL98-B742LB The problem I have is this.

The retarded guy who had it before me did not take care of it left out in the weather for two years and there for was not aware of the fact that the tail pipe cap was off. Needless to say the motor is seized. When i removed the muffler there was water; when I cracked the heads off there was water in all of the cylinders. The motor might still be good maybe by taking it apart cleaning it, replacing the rings etc Re sleeve. but I'm afraid to take it apart anymore since I called bobcat and they said that the motor has been out of production for sometime now and that they did not sell parts for it anymore.

So I am left with this POS!

I want to find a motor that fits but I don't know where to start. Ive read these forums and it sounds like there not so common. So my question is, Can I find another motor that will fit?
If so which motor would mount up with the space I have?
I'm interested in getting a bigger motor something diesel. Please advise me as to what to do. I know u guys know your stuff so feed me something-Please Check out the pics of what I have so far. I can post them on the page but this is a link to them. There all nice and neat in the album. Let me know what you think.

Thanks again---------------> http://photobucket.com/skidsteerforum

I would look at getting a rebuild kit for you motor. It may take some work but finding the parts may take some time. Be patient.

As far as converting it over you are going to spend more than what a good running late model used unit will cost you.

If it were me I would probably part it out and start over. I think in the long run you will be money ahead.

There are 4 motors for that era of SS. Deutz (741), Ford (742), Mitsubishi (742), Kubota (743). First things first. Clean out all water including oil. put about 1in of light oil (marvel works great) and let soak for a few days. If you can't turn over with a breaker bar on the crank then using one of the pistons that is not on the very top or bottom of the stroke and using a 2x4 and heavy hammer strick a few times to attempt to break free the motor. BTW that motor has several cousins, the ford pinto, fiesta etc and parts are easy to get. Worst case senario is if you break it more no additional loss. Also I've hear of repowering these SS with a Winconson motor. A good site is www.skidsteerforum.com.

Good luck.

You can use any motor in that piece of equipment. A honda 1200 cc or any other motor of that size will fit. All you have to worry about is the alignment to the hydraulic pump shaft and that is easy. Being the pump shaft is on a universal coupling, the plate that couples can be coupled to any motor.

RPW: Given your knowledge of this era of machines, can you tell me if the Kubota engine out of a 743 will go right into a 732, or if modifications will be required first? I have an old 732 with a tired engine, and I bought a parts 743 for $500 bucks. The parts machine was running not too long ago and is basically a donor unit for just about any chassis/hydraulic part I might need for the 732. It worked in a fertilizer delivery place, so although the hours weren't too high, the cage & seat area rusted out really bad. The rest of the machine they would hose off and spray down with WD40 to preserve it, which worked quite well, actually (its pretty much all in good shape except the bobtach) Let me know if you can and thanks.
