And no thumb extender.
Next time use a 5 gal. drain pan.

As i stated in the original message:

""A 5g bucket won't fit under very well, and let you manipulate the tools""

Si i was stuck with a smaller pan..

I wonder how hard it would be to put a little chain (like on canteen caps or diesel tank filler caps) from the frame to the drain plug. That way you could unscrew and just let it drop, but you would have access to it quickly if needed. I realize you don't want something hanging down a long way to catch limbs, brush, etc. that might cause problems, but seems like a workable solution.

Shouldn't be too hard to weld or braze / solder a loop on for a chain.. etc.

Might be able to drill hole (like for safety wire on aircraft) insert chain in loop of cotter pin and put thru hole, spread ends. This would work for someone who doesn't have welder, torch, etc. You could do this to pretty much all drain plugs, oil fill plugs (like on mower gear boxes with the square head pipe plugs, etc.). Might need to add this to the mechanics/tips & tricks thread.

Great ideas for highway use but wouldn't last me as long as it took to do it, off road. Surely something would snag it.
