I would like to roof over my pond dock but don't know how to begin.

The dock is built on wooden posts sunk into the mud and has been here 25 yrs. Very solid. Womanized decking.

There is a 12' wide 24' long slip in the middle of the dock where I keep my jon boat. I want to roof over that area.

Thinking of aluminum post framing? Do I frame on the dock or do I need to add new posts into the bottom of the pond?

Any directiion appreciated.

Thanks

Ernie

I recently built a dock, but had it built specifically for a roof. Steel posts with welded uprights to support the roof structure. But of course your situation is different. I would think the route you go will depend on how good you want it to look and how much money you have to spend.

Almost anything you do will look like an "add-on" unless you put new posts down into the lakebed, IMHO. But if the existing posts are solid, you could "scab" onto the posts with your uprights. I see no need for metal unless you just want them. Or you could mount to the top of your deck. If the tops of your posts are solid, you could mount post anchors to the top and go straight up from there with treated 4x4s. That would probably look the best. Or just put the post anchors on the decking, making sure you have enough joist support underneath and you have beefed it up some to account for high winds. Cheapest way might be to get one of those low-cost metal carports, that have aluminum legs and framing. I just ordered an 18'x21' for my lake property next to the house. They come in all sizes. Even Walmart has their do-it-yourself version.

Without seeing actual photos of what you've got, it's hard to say which way is the best to go. Good luck.

We rebuilt out boat cover a few years ago. We use 1.5" white PVC pipe for a frame. Then purchased a large silver tarp for the roof. The tarp last for two seasons. We have it set up so you can pull the tarp back to expose the frame above the stern of the boat. You can then fold the framing back (on hinge) and get into the stern of the boat. The system works well for the family cottage and boat!

Thanks for all the advice.

I bought the American Steel Carport and am very pleased.

Does anyone know how much weight the roof trusses would support?

They should have a snow load rating on your canopy.........I don't think you'd want to hoist your boat out using just the trusses.............Check with the mfg for the real specs........Tom
