Looks like we are gonna start building us a pole shed. Poles will be hardwood (mostly white oak) from the property and it's looking like we're gonna hire a guy with a portable sawmill to come to the property and rip the boards from the trees we have there already cut down from when we cleared the land last summer/fall.

Tryin' to get get a rough idea on how much lumber it'll take to do a 24X16 shed (3 sides closed and full open front). 12 foot to 8 foot is what we estimating the front to back height.
Any help on how much material we need would be greatly apprecaited!

If the open side is the 24' side then 576 board ft. This is for the siding only. The amount of wood that you would need for framing would depend on your framing style. Of course you will need more board ft for siding as you will have cutoff that will be discarded. Hope this gets you started. big dan

Thanks, that is exactly the type of info I'm looking for..a rough idea on what's needed. I was clueless! My guess was over 500'.

We look to have poles spaced 8' apart, no real math formula, just 8' material is most common, and have considered 6' apart, and 4' is possible but my wife will have to realize that BO-DADDY needs a phd for the 'Bota house! We are pretty flexible and really broke, but we do have plenty of trees!

Wanna buy a house? Land? Business? I got some nice things listed and by golly, I need a phd!

It's been a tough year for BO-DADDY, being a realtor and all. Geez, now my F250 is sick and have a bill at over $3300 and it's still in the shop not running (17 days!).
The sawmill man is a coming on Monday morning at first light!! He said I should have just over 1,000 board foot in what I've got on the ground. If I have too I'll drop another tree or two in reach of my 'Bota pulling capacity, it drags them good when it's level, so most my trees are down the hill... oh well.

I'm the able body one should assistant and hope to get a few pics along the way.

Any great designs? 3 sided 16X24 is what were shooting for but that can change...

If you have lots of wood on your property you could always cut some extra oak and sell it for lumber to a local cabinet maker or wood worker.

Pics a coming soon. He arrived at 5:45am and left at about 4:45pm and we got 1080 board feet. It was a Wood Mizer something, a 1993 model he purchased in 1996 with 740 hours and if I remember correctly he had 7000+ hours or was it 4000? Anyhow, he impressed me and so the the mill! He's nearly 70 I'm guessing and I worked my but off stacking and keeping the logs handy. Most the boards are 16', there is a handful of 12' stuff too. We had a crooked log or two that got culled but he cut nearly my entire stack and there was only one bad log!! Ripped two sides and about 1/3 down the second rip the log hollowed out and there was no holes in the end or in the side either.

A 16X24 3 sided shed is the plan, and estimates came in at around 500 board feet total.
I didn't have a cut list and told him what I was building and he went to town and I relied on his experience. 2x4 for stringers and rafters and 2x6 for the top stringer with a 2x4 plate for the rafters to set upon. He told me that'd take care of my little shed.

Wow, I want one now!! Not a lot of trees big enough for me to mill but loved the day.

BTW, anyone wanna but my 37' 5er? Take over payments and I'll give you my 2003 Ford F250!! It's blown up and looking at $7,000 for engine replacement! I am serious on this deal! We're too broke to trade vehicles and the 5er needs a 3/4 ton to haul it around.
