Blown engine; rebuild or replace with new

I have a JD LX255 which has a Kohler CV15S; 15HP single cylinder engine; turns over but no compression and a clunking noise so suspect thrown rod or piston.

Reading online it appears not an easy repair so wondering if purchasing a replacement engine might be a better option in terms of time and cost.

Would appreciate hearing from others that have had similar problems.

Any recommendations as to a good source to purchase a replacement engine?

I don't think the CV15S is current model so any recommendations as to current model Kohler that would be a direct replacement without a lot of modification.

Here's what I would like to put in my LT180 if the engine ever blows in it. Not sure if it will fit yours. Maybe with some mods?

Get me the spec number so I know exactly what engine you have, and a possible conversion.

Replace it with a new engine. Call Small engine wearhouse they will help you.

Kyle in Tex; Yes the 26HP looks great; its has a larger diameter shaft so not a perfect fit. Would be nice however...

It looks like the entire command single line has been replaced with the Courage single, which has mixed reviews, and would require mods to make work. I checked for where other people had replace an engine on your model without any luck. Even checked for Briggs repowers to no avail. So as of now there isn't a replacement engine for your mower.

Yikes! I hope there is something close that fits. Any suggestions as to engines that would be close is appreciated.

There are engines in the kohler and the briggs lines that would fit your mower, but will require modifying the wiring and the exhaust.

I would at least take it apart and see what the damage is. I've replaced broken connecting rods for small $$ and gotten more years out of an engine. Sometimes they make a mess inside though.

i replaced the engine on my Husquvarna thru them. includes free shipping. I paid $510.00 for complete unit. it came with new carb,fuel pump,etc. took less than 1 hour to swap unit out.

I was getting bids of $400-500 for a rebuilt unit.
