Just picked up a Woods RM 59-2 finishing mower, don't know how old yet. The blades look like someone did some brush hogging and rock grinding with it and I would like to replace them.

I just can't seem to get them loose, any suggestions?

Thanks
Randy

Are they left-handed threads? Maybe you are tightening them:confused:

Heat, 3/4" socket, breaker bar and a pipe. Sometimes they are just a ..... Also a few taps with a hammer may help.

I can't say for sure, but I don't think they would be left hand threads. However, a good impact wrench may be necessary.

My brother has a 60" Woods rear finish mower that discharges to the left and it has left hand thread bolts that hold the blades, don't remember the model number.

Often the nut/bolt gets buggered up pretty bad making it hard to get off. Also, the grass juice gets in there filling up the spaces and hardening into an amazingly high quality form of thread locker. That plus rust from the water makes getting the blades off a real bear.

If you can, heat the nut up to glowing red hot. Let it cool, spray it with penetrating oil and it should come off with a lot of grunting and a long cheater bar. I think torque specs are in the 450 ft-lb range, but don't know for sure on that exact one.

Thanks for the help.

The bolts are left hand threads and I must admit I did try to take them off thinking they were right hand threads. The head takes a 15/16" socket. The first 12 point socket on a breaker bar did not survive.

I got them off by turning the mower on its front, placing a block of wood under the blade and using an impact socket and an amplifier on the breaker bar. The mower sat unused in the weeds for a few years which I think didn't help the situation plus the old blades looked like they were used to mow rocks.

I picked up the mower for $175.00. It looks like only one blade spindle has just a little play in it.

Thanks again,
Randy
