I have been planning on sealing my drive this fall but, yesterday I was out working in the yard when a man stopped by and offered to seal my driveway for a decent price and included a 2 year warranty. Of course that price was only good for right then but, I took his card and told him I would get back to him. The price he gave me was about the same as the materials would cost me but, the stuff he uses gets sprayed down and is dry in 2 hrs where the sealer that I was going to use you need to brush it on and it takes 3 days to dry. So my question is, has anyone had their drive sealed with the spray on type and had it last or are these guys like the ones that want to paint your barn roof and use water with a little bit of paint mixed in to make it look good for a month or so ? Thanks.

There actually is a sealer that can be sprayed on and will be dry within a very few hours. The city applied it to our street last year.

HOWEVER, I can also tell you, as a former law enforcement officer, that this is one of the oldest scams around. A lot of fly-by-nighters do just as you said, just show up, happen to have material left from another job, so they'll do yours cheap, but it has to be right now, etc. and they spray on some worthless material, collect your money, and disappear.

NOW . . . , local, reputable companies CAN also have material left and want to do you a good job at a bargain price.

SO, it's up to you to determine which category the guy you're dealing with belongs in; may be a bargain, may be a worthless scam.

Slurry seal or emulsion spray?

The ole rule of "ya get what you pay for" applies.

Your guess is as good as mine :). If I were to go the spray on route which would be the best? Thanks

Further to what Bird said, it might be worse than worthless it might cause damage to your driveway. My in laws had a guy come spray their driveway a few years ago,for a good price:rolleyes: . All seemed fine at first except whenever it was raining for the next six months you spun your tires, like on ice, whenever trying to get out of the driveway. In the area this driveway is located it made it real dangerous. Now we just go to the same place the people who pave for a living go to for supplies. They are more than willing to sell you the proper product, for what it is worth. Then you didn't throw your money away, and cause potential problems down the road.

I did the "guy stopping by with spray on extra sealer once" 470.00 dollers. It looked good for about six weeks.....junk .Then I looked around on the net and found a really good roll on sealer and it still looks great after two years. It cost me right around 500.00 deliverd with brushes and crack filler.

Thanks for the replies. As I figured, looks like I will have to put sealing the driveway back onto my list. Has it always been this bad with contractors and such. It seems every time you turn around there is a story about someone getting ripped off.

Chatme,
I am interested in that 'real good...' stuff.
Do you remember what is the product you used?

I had elmusion sprayed on my driveway a few days after it was installed.

Now I slurry coat and spread with a squeege every three years. I fill any cracks with a hot seal filler prior to the slurry coat. Been doing this around 15 yrs now and the driveway still in pretty good shape.

I'd contact a quality paving contractor or a slurry coating specialist. Or, you can obtain the slurry from a material supplier in a 55 gal drum and do it yourself. The trick is to keep it agitated and apply asap. Very messy and mistakes are unforgiving. You can clean up with deisel.

It was a acrylic based synthetic material type. I think it was from a company called Latexite but I'm not sure. I do remember it is used to do tennis courts all so. I will see if I can find the bill from them and get you the correct name.
