Whats the biggest 2 stage pump available on the market?
Heres the deal, I have two engines right now for an upcoming logsplitter project, one is a 30 horse perkins diesel and the other is a kohler 18 horse.
I have a 7 inch cylinder that has a 36 inch stroke, came of a fire engine.
This will be a second splitter for me just for splitting big rounds down to managable size for my splitfire, and yes I dont really need it but I have all the parts except for the pump and hoses.
So I know there are 28gpm two stage pumps readily available but I would like something bigger if possible, maybe 40 or 50gpm

Is that mad, what can I expect for speed if I do use the 28gpm on a 7 inch cylinder?

Thanks for looking:)

You could use a PTO pump driving it at 1000 rpm and get about 40 GPM at 2000 psi.

Surplus Center - 9.9 CU IN PRINCE HC-P-K11C PTO PUMP CI 1000 RPM

It will take about 60 HP to accomplish this.

Perhaps you could use two two stage pumps and paralleled them with a check valve on each.

Surplus Center - 28 GPM DYNAMIC 2-STAGE PUMP

Cyl speed would be about 12.8 extend mode at low pressure using one pump.

About 51 sec to extend if you had to use high pressure and 7 GPM.

What you may have is a combination of the two GPM. Speed will not be consistent because of the resistance of any particular piece of wood. Easy split wood may use low pressure and will be fast.
Hard wood may use the slow mode.

Push force at 3000 psi would be 115,452 lbs, or 9126 tons

I can use either engine, the kohler is new and the perkins has three thou hours on it but runs perfect.... so if the biggest 2 stage pump IS 28 gpm then I might as well use the Kohler....

DRL ,

You are so right , and I am so wrong.

Boy, did I screw that up.

I am going to blame it on early morning activity and no coffee.

Eaton/Vickers makes an unloading valve that mounts directly to there 4535V series vane pumps to make these operate as a hi-lo pump. I believe the largest flow rates on these are 60 GPM @1200 RPM on the high flow & 38 GPM @ 1200 RPM for the low flow. I believe these are rated to 1800 RPM & 2500 PSI so that would be 147 GPM low pressure and 57 GPM @ high pressure.

Cylinder speed calculations in inches per second: Q = VA
Q = flow rate in cubic inches per second to convert GPM into cubic inches per second multiply GPM by 3.85
V = cylinder velocity in inches per second
A = cylinder area in square inches

28 GPM & 7 inch bore cylinder

28 x 3.85 = 107.8

7 inch bore = 38.48 square inch area

107.8 divided by 38.48 = 2.8 Inch per second extend speed or 12.8 second extend time

Yep you are correct 60GPM is the biggest cart kit for that pump but they are 3000psi. I just did a 3 pump system with 1 pump at 60 gpm and a tandem at 30 and 10 gpm's. 2 Sun unloading carts with the 60 gpm set at 500PSI the 30 gpm set at 1500 and the relief set at 3000psi. The cylinder has a 24" bore!!! Your best bet for $$$ is the 28 GPM unit. CJ
