OK my workshop currently has a metal roll up garage type door. Not the ones that roll into a roll above the header, but ones that come back on tracks. My door is roughly 8ft high and 12ft wide. Before someone asks, I do not have enough room above the header for the true roll up doors, nor do I have the cash for them.

SO with that out of the way, I am thinking bi-fold for several reasons. One is width, I don't want to worry about sagging 6ft wide doors, since there is only sloping decomposed granite outside and would not do well with wheels under the doors.

In addition, one side of the building has only about 5ft from door opening to the corner and that would mean it would stick out past the building. I don't like that. Also, on windy days a 6ft door can be hard to control, or dangerous.

So I am thinking bi-fold, with some sort of track system above, like a heavy duty closet door. Bi-fold doors would look pretty cool, too, I think. I am planning on windows at the top, and insulated, probably with foam.

Do you guys know of sources for materials like the track, or any other ideas? The concrete slab, at the door opening has a 1" step down to it, for when heavy rains hit us, it does not come into the main floor area, so I could use some sort of rubber door seal on the door bottoms.

edit:forgot to add, some of my reasons for this are; the door gets in the way when working on projects near the ceiling, and it blocks out my overhead lights, when open. On hot days I do not want to work with it closed either.

Several farmers in my area have built their own bi-fold doors. They just use a flat piece of steel for the track and then weld an angle iron over where the roller runs. The roller is usually just a fairly large bearing in about a 2-3" od size.

I'm planning on building one for my shop. My door is the same size as yours. I'm just going to buy some light angle iron say 2" and weld up a frame and cover it with tin. The neighbour here has the ability to spray foam. I'm just going to get him spray the insulation on and I'm done.

I'm thinking of using a small rubber tire for my rollers and just make a pocket top and bottom for the tire to fit into. That way I can just run the tire against my door frame and I don't have to build a track. My yard is well sheltered from the wind so I don't have to worry about the wind grabbing the door while it's going up or down.

I'm either going to use counter weights to help me open the door or set up a winch system. I haven't decided yet.

The concrete under the door is uneven so I'm thinking of getting some plastic that doesn't freeze and wrapping it around some foam to seal the bottom. A piece of uv resistant rubber would do the job too.

My uncle needed every inch of head room and went with many fold door on tracks... picture a roll top desk top turned 90 degrees...

The downside is it takes up interior wall space when open...

His garage is like a walk out basement with retaining walls on both side so a convention side rolling barn door would have nowhere to go when open...

I think you are looking for something like this?

My uncle has this door:

That was interesting. Have never seen one go sideways before. Yea the first pic is sort of what I had in mind, except I would just have a 2-2 split. I have a walk-in door at one end of the shop already. Wish I had gone this route in the beginning.

I had given a little thought to a build my own, and have been browsing the web to see how it's being done.

Some issues I am trying to resolve in my head, before I start anything, are how to seal them from the outside, if I go with tracks. It seems that having the outer doors, outside edge, hinged to the door frame, and the inner door on a track might be the best way. I was hoping to have the doors protrude outside when open, but that makes it difficult (in my head anyway) to seal it inside. The current door jamb is 2x12s on the sides and top.

My uncle lives in snow country and the door is insulated and weatherstripped.

It really looks like a conventional sectional roll up door suspended on it's side...

After 12 years he has only had one issue... keeping the bottom track clean... grandkids were visiting and spilled some pea gravel and it was not as easy as just sweeping up with a broom...

When I worked at the airport we had sliding hangar doors with ground tracks. Constantly cleaning sand out of them. Rocks, etc... At least they were heavy duty, like mini-RR track and were embedded in the cement. But even the smallest of rocks would stop them.

I thought of this type: https://www.google.com/search?q=fol...gC#tbm=isch&q=horizontal+folding+garage+doors

You could probably use the existing door with new overhead bi-fold hardware.

I've mentioned before about those types of bi-fold doors. We had them at the airport. They are sails in a wind. Lets say someone has the back door open and there's a good breeze on the back door side of the house. Now start opening that bi-fold door and that lets the air come through the back door and it blows the bi-fold off its tacks at the bottom, then it flaps around denting the siding near the bottom of both sides of the door. They really need very robust hardware to be safe and reliable.
