I'm not sure how or when the pin gets bent but this is the second time I have had to replace it. It gets a slight bend that makes it very difficult to remove / install. Has anyone else had this problem and if so, know of any other type of pin that can be purchased that is stronger than what JD offers? Thanks /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I bought a used 48 backhoe about a year ago. The boom pin was bent and looked like it had been beaten in and out with a hammer on a regular basis.

I bought a new detent pin on-line from Big Sky Distribution ($6.00 vs. $36.00 from John Deere) and when I installed it, I discovered that the sleeves in the backhoe frame and the holes in the boom were not aligned correctly. I suspect that the sleeves had moved out of square when they were welded in place. A few minutes work with a die grinder and carbide burr resolved the alignment issue and the pin now slides in and out without a problem.

I bent mine by not fully inserting it. The soft material straightened right out. It is better to bend the pin than the boom....

Thanks Jim / Mike. This form is just great! I really like the pins that Big Ski offers but I now wonder if selecting a pin that uses softer steal would helps protect the BH. Thanks again /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

U really don't know, but that is one reason they might choose a soft pin

I can't edit that last post, but I meant that "I" don 't know.

But I have been thinking. The pin has tremendous shear force applied to it. A harder steel will often be more brittle, and more likely to fail under shear stress. (just like cold working a piece of wire to break it...)

Unfortunately, the soft steel which has great shear strength, bends easlily.

So, if the Big Sky pins stay put, are easy take in and out, and have sufficient shear strength, they are a great choice.

Besides, if one does shear, is that a huge problem?
