I've been trying to find some information on a Hobart Beta Mig 250. It seems most people who know the machine thought they were a pretty good machine in their day. I saw an ad for one for sale, $200. The ad says it runs(whatever that means), wirefeed works but won't strike an arc. He thinks "the hi low switch might be bad" Does that sound like a reasonable assumption or just a fish job? Someone out there must be familiar with these machines. Any thoughts?

Could be as simple as the Contactor or as complex as a bad Transformer. May have a bad connection inside on the ground. You would have to have it tested. A transformer would run about $600.00 last I looked for a Miller.

It's obsolete and in unknown condition.

I'd offer eighty bucks, then if it's the transformer I'd scrap whatever copper is in it and sell the other parts via Ebay or welding forums or save them for the "experiment" pile.

I'd give eighty for a MIG that size I KNEW had a dead transformer for the parts stash and MIG gun.

If he takes the lowball offer, post on the Hobart forums since they have some gurus there.

As for hi/lo setting: mine has a copper bus held by wing nuts (by the wire drive spools) and you loosen and move from hi to lo terminal.
