Chain prices seem to be going up and some of my chain has been used quite a bit. Although it's not nearly as sensitive as straps, chain does indeed degrade with wear. For the size equipment I haul right now, 3/8" grade 70 is what I need. I have some good 1/2" chain from when I had larger equipment, but it's just so dang heavy to lug around.

Some places advertise a low appearing price only to gouge you on shipping. This is one of the better priced places I found with a bit of looking Transport Chain Grade 70 3/8''X20' Short Link [TC382070] - $38.99 : Ratchet Straps, Tie Down Straps, E Track Tie Downs, Moving Blankets & Pads, Cargo Straps, U.S. Cargo Control . There were a few places that advertised $35 for the 20' section but ended up costing more by the time I added in shipping. Any other ideas?

No 3/8 grade 70 at my local Home Depot or Lowes.
Tractor Supply had it, but they wanted $70 each.

Well Dargo...we all know how you love Harbor freight ....I recently bought their 20' 5/16" grade 70 w/clevis hooks. It's currently listed online for $34.99.....20% off coupon makes it $28. If you have to have 3/8"...I agree w/ Chris, Rural King gets a lot of my business and would be my next choice.

Unfortunately, 5/16 is too small. I have actually arrived at a destination with and discovered a 5/16" grade 70 chain broke along the way. I have a Rural King only about a mile from me, but they always seem way high; like the $70 from TSC.

Excavator, track loader, skid steer etc, etc. I use a pretty good sized cheater bar with my boomers on larger equipment. For some odd reason it seems like I don't get ratcheting boomers as tight.

*edit*
Yup, Rural King is really high on chain. Here is all they advertise; 5/16"X14' grade 70 for $36.99. http://www.ruralking.com/binder-chain-5-16-x-14-w-grab-gr-70.html

Their general use grade 43 chain is $43.99 for a 20' section of 3/8". http://www.ruralking.com/binder-chain-5-16-x-14-w-grab-gr-70.html

This place http://www.ruralking.com/binder-chain-5-16-x-14-w-grab-gr-70.html lists a 20' grade 70 for $35, but they make up for it on shipping so the above that is listed for $38.99 ends up less expensive.

If you need a lot do what we do down at the lake and order a full 5 gallon pail of it then cut to length and put the hooks on it. I order just chain because we are using it for anchors but the companies I have found on line also have hooks and whatever else you need.

I've recently broken a 5/16" chain twice while yanking out saplings with it.

I think what happened was, we would wrap the tree & hook the hook on a link one time, & then later, on another tree, hook the hook on that same link as before but the other direction, so the link would get bent the other way, so we were slowly but surely bending links back & forth until 2 now have snapped. I guess it'd be good to hook the hook on a link in a way that continues to bend the link in the same direction each time, but that's probably not be realistic/ reasonable.

You would think it should be cheaper by the pail, but look at the link Dargo posted for 3/8" Grade 70. $38.99 for 20 foot with hooks or $833 for a 400 foot drum and no hooks, so there's no savings there you're actually paying quite a bit more. Maybe you can save on shipping the whole drum by truck freight compared to individual lengths??

I bought some 3/8 GR70 and extra hooks from US Cargo last year. The price with shipping was as good as I could find. But it is Chinese chain and hooks. I could have bought USA made locally but for a lot more $$.

They say it's "Short Link" chain. I measured mine and the links are 2 in long OD. Does that sound right? I know the links look a lot longer than the 5/16" I have from Lowes. The short links should be better, more links in 20 foot of chain.
