Hey Folks:

I'm in Raleigh, NC. Have difficulty getting grass to grow. I'm shooting for most of the 1/4 acre around my house. We have about 4 acres of trees behind us, and quite a few trees to the sides. Also have a 60 lb hound dog who does as much damage to the yard as he can. :p As you may or may not know, NC tends to have fairly mild winters (averaging around 40-50 degrees during the day and probably 30-40 at night, very low humidity, reasonable amount of rain), reasonably hot and dry summers (average 80's - 90's or so, heavy rain on occasion, very high humidity).

I've planted grass several years in a row, usually tall fescue or something like the Rebel mix from Lowes/Home Depot (which I believe is a mix of fescue and kentucky bluegrass). These seem to do well in the Spring and Fall when it's 60-70 degrees or so and enough rain. However, every summer it turns brown if I don't water it frequently, and a lot of it dies from being in too much shade plus having the dog traffic.

So, what I need is a breed of grass that has these characteristics:

1) Likes warm to hot weather.
2) Can survive somewhat dry summers.
3) Holds up well to dog and people traffic.
4) Spreads like crazy and grows dense.
5) Grows well in both the shade or sun.

I was thinking of trying perhaps some Centipede grass, or maybe Bermuda grass this Spring. I don't actually care if it turns brown in the Winter...we aren't outside then anyway, so who cares. We are outside in the Spring, Summer, and Fall, and that's when I'd like the yard to look nice.

Any suggestions for what grasses to consider? Any newer breeds that might serve me well? I realize I may have to plant something different in the mostly sunny versus mostly shady areas, and that's fine as long as it grows and I don't have to replant it every fall or spring!

TIA,
Dave

Hi Dave
You might want to consider a warm season grass like bermuda or zoysia. Theyre pretty heat/drought tolerant and the zoysia doesnt require so much summer up keep (ie mowing). During the cooler months they go dormant and it looks like the lawn is dead (which it isnt). However, in the end youd probably better off by visiting your county agent. Theyre free and a wealth of information. Theres also online help as well at NCSU TurfFiles - turfgrass management, lawn care, and turf tips

I feel your pain ! But IMHO, good luck what with your pet and trees. I'm in a very similiar situation here in Lexington (about 90 miles west of you). I can have a pretty decent looking yard from late fall until spring with annual rye. Just get to mow as much as summer with the mild wet winter we've had. Come summer with the trees (shade), our dogs, and clay soil it's practically impossible to keep a good stand of any fescue. I'm to the point of cutting some more trees, or most likely - going all natural. Sometimes even watering does'nt help all fescues in the summer - the cool water temperature can shock the grass unless pumped off the surface of a pond as a sod farm would do.

Thanks for the replies, folks. I don't know much about zoysia grass, so I'll research that a bit. Thanks for the lead...

I do know that I ain't plantin' no more fescue...that just seems to be a waste of time!

Then again it may not have anything to do w/ what youre planting...it might be the media. This is where the county agent will come in. Im pretty sure he'll have you do a soil sample so you can find out what sort of prep (if any needs to be done). Ive found most agents more than willing to help until the desired results are achieved.

Dave, I used to live about 10 miles above Durham. I had great luck with fine bladed fescue. I also planted some KY 31 Fescue and it did well.
Good luck with your lawn.
