Best Flail Mower Size - JD 2720

My SIL has just bought a new 2720 with a 200cx loader, and a front mounted snow blower. Nice rig for him. I have been promoting that he purchase a flail mower for his use in maintaining about 7 acres of wildlife area surrounding his home....which is a mix of clover and mixed grasslands (Reason: safety and clean, even cut).

I think he will use a dedicated lawn-mower for the 3/4 acre lawn around his home.... but this is about the considerable acreage along his tree rows and such.

I'm looking for suggestions on the size his 25 PTO hp tractor can handle. I believe he should be looking at a flail like the Caroni.....maybe a 5 footer?? Not sure if this covers his wheel tracks (54", with turf tires) due to the Caroni offset.

Any 1st hand experience with a JD 2720 and rear mower?......or other suggestions or ideas for a rear mounted mower for his tractor?

I have a new Phoenix SLE 48" flail mower that I really like. Only about 5 hours on it so far though on a Kubota B2320 gear drive(18 PTO). The SLE is a little larger than recommended but the Kubota pulls it fine, a great match it seems. :thumbsup: The Caroni or the Phoenix were the two I was considering. The Phoenix seemed heavier built and had some neat features like tooless knife changes, heavy duty knives and skids as options, centered or offset positioning with a few bolt changes and the right paint colors :laughing:. I have heard good things about the Caroni too, either would probably be a good choice. The flail is SO much more enjoyable to run than a rotary cutter.

If he purchases a finish flailmower he will have no need for a dedicated lawn mower to mow around his home as the the flail mower will be able to handle both jobs with one tractor without breaking a sweat.
