Just thought I'd drop a note about my experience changing the primary drive belt on an MTD/Troybilt riding mower. The mower is about 8 yrs. old and the belt was slipping, cracked and worn. It's the belt that goes from the motor to the trans.

I followed the instructions in the manual but when I got to the motor pulley they didn't say anything about the bent metal "belt keepers" around the pulley. There's no way the pulley would come off the shaft, and the manual didn't indicate that it needed to. I ended up having to take the motor loose along with a lot more parts to get the belt off. All in All, I'd say there should have been an additional 10 steps in the manual rather than the 6 it had.

I did this in my yard on a piece of carpet. I had so many parts off the mower I didn't know if I'd ever get it back together. About 6 hours after starting, I was back mowing. I don't recommend trying this unless you are very determined and too cheap to pay somebody like me. LOL
