Doable, yes... easy for a newbie, not likely. Just the swivel for the front wheels can be a problem, much less the doors for the dump. For a lot of dumpable materials, the center bottom dump would cause problems for the rear wheels to have to run over, but they have good use for what they are designed for.
Unless you need the complexity, I would stick with a more traditional dump trailer.

If you tend to pick up new hobbies and run with them with ease, then you probably can do this. I have a friend in south Florida that bought a mill, then a lathe, and now a CNC Mill and has been making parts almost right after she got them. She has never had any machining classes, just does a lot of reading. Due to time restaints, and brain power, I don't pick up fabrication quite as easy as some, but still manage to build a piece or two when I have time.

Is it doable... Sure!. As a beginners project... Not so sure :(

Not sure if you know, but that image is from this site Trail Tailor -- Bob Gervais

For his use it kind of makes sense. He maintains and builds ATV trails. On a ATV trail where there is no headroom, than a bellydump sort of makes sense. If you dont need that than id personally stick to the tried and true, traditional dump. The one pictured is quite small, about the size of a ATV, although the picture makes it look larger.

If anyone else is interested, you should check out the page i linked to. He has a few neat, ATV powered (towed) tools. Like a ride on grader that i like.

He also has a pic of a ATV powered "Train" that he uses. ATV pulling a Grader, pulling a dump, pulling a roller. :eek I know my 450cc ATV couldnt pull that, certainly not thru the woods. Id have enough problems with the grader alone,:D

I was going to use it for golf trails I just thought the unit would be perfect for my tractor if I could make it a yard and a half or two yards. I ran the job were bob took the picture of the hilly trail. That was quite a few years ago.

Instead of building one, consider buying 4 wheel grain trailer that has a center dump. Modify the bottom to create a way to spread your load as you desire. Much cheaper than new materials, has running gear and a lot of the work is done. These can be bought cheaply at farm sales, autions and consignment sales. Most will hold 250-350 bushels.

Wow. Those are some nice looking trails. Good job. Wish ours around here were that well maintained.

Im curious, how did the grader work ? Could the atv pull it? Could it cut unbroken ground or just spread loose gravel? Ive thought of making one for my ATV but doubted i could get enough traction to actually do anything productive.

The low CG of a belly dump could definitely be an asset in uneven ground. It would be an interesting build if you do it, post up some pics.

Would bob build you one? or offer assistance? With a little skill you could pull it off, not that hard of a build really. Give you a good chance to improve your welding skills:D

The grader was also pulled by atv. Only saw it on fresh gravel but it was quick. The trail was started with 6 inch material then 2 inch then crush. Alot of the heavy work was acomplished with a holder tractor using a sand dump on the back area over the engine. Seeing it was one of the reasons for purchasing the Antonio carraro TTR4400 that I now have. Much of the same features.
As for a grain trailer I believe that it would be too wide for my purposes and probably too big as I only have 38ph. I think it would be a great rig to cut down to the size that I need though. I think I could probably make a two yard trailer as the job I have to do is 4inches deep, 4 feet wide and 1 km in length.
quick turnarounds are key and I think the belly dumper would be the quickest. I really like the idea of a strictly dump trailer also as the uses would be increased. Any ideas of the weight that could be pulled by a 38hp hydrosatic?
Sorry but I have no pictures of the atvs working back in the day. I do have some good ones of trees being blasted to look like they came down naturally. I will scan a few in the next few days so I can post them.

I have not seen Bob in ten plus years and his contacts on the site no longer work. The guy who was really good on the job was his partner called terry and he was the end all be all of the builders.
