Is it real? The last couple of days the TV has had a segment on the bedbug infestation that they lead us to believe it's almost an epidemic. I don't know anyone who has them, and nothing on the local news about them, so I'm thinking it must be more media sensationalism. Anyone seen the problem yet?

I have not seen them thank goodness!

The reports of bedbugs have been increasing over the last few years. It seems that NYC has them in good numbers. I read a Disney related website and there have been quite a few conversations there regarding bedbugs. People are seeing them in hotels, even at Disney, and if you are unlucky, you see them at home.

People are checking hotel rooms when they first arrive. Some are finding bed bugs. But you don't see many people mentioning find the bugs compared to the number of visitors.

The recommendation was to check around the edge of the carpets and walls as well as around the bed mattresses and headboards. The bugs do not like light so look where there is darkness. And near feeding places which would be the bed. :D

Supposedly if you put your luggage outside in the sun it will kill/drive off the bed bugs.

We have been traveling a bit over the last few years and so far, knock on wood, no bed bugs.

I have looked! :D

My mom who is 86 has told stories about having them when she was a kid, they had to wash all the bedding in hot water and hang it outside in the sun, then they would put a jar lid filled with coal oil under each bed post to keep them from getting back into the bed.

Pyrethrin and Permethrin kill them. So if you do get them go to your local farm supply store, but a bottle and spray your house. Be careful with the chemicals around fish and cats.

The bedbug resurgence is very real. One of the other dads in my son's Cub Scout pack runs his own exterminating business. He is making quite a good bit of change in the last year or two treating hotels, primarily.

"In recent years, bed bugs have also made a comeback in the U.S. They are increasingly being encountered in homes, apartments, hotels, motels, health care facilities, dormitories, shelters, schools, and modes of transport. Other places where bed bugs sometimes appear include movie theaters, laundries/dry cleaners, furniture rental outlets and office buildings. Immigration and international travel have undoubtedly contributed to the resurgence of bed bugs in the U.S. Changes in modern pest control practice and less effective bed bug pesticides are other factors suspected for the recurrence."

And they are apparently very resistant to pyrethroid insecticides.

The latest Bed bugs arrived from south of the border.
I have a friend who's on the border patrol, and that's what he mentioned years ago. Its just taken a while to become an epidemic.:(

On our trip this spring from Texas to Washington State and back, we never experienced any problems with bedbugs in any of the Best Western Hotels where we stayed exclusively. We did check for them in each room before bringing in our luggage.

About three years ago for my birthday, my wife gave us a trip to Niagara Falls. We got reservations in an Econo-Lodge Hotel on the American side near the falls, and that was a big, big mistake. The hotel was shabby, overpriced, dirty, and bedbugs were all around the bed and under it. We turned on the lights and must have seen about a dozen of them easily visible around the bed. We got out of there quickly.

What I am hearing is that even some of the big, new, and clean hotels are experiencing problems. The best advice I can give is to keep your bags packed tightly and don't leave clothes hanging in the closets where they can get on them or lay eggs in/on them. I might even suggest that until you know there are no bedbugs, you put your bags in large garbage bags and seal them with tie wraps. This is extreme, but you have to prevent them from being transported place-to-place and especially back to your home. It's easy enough to pack a few garbage bags and dispose of them after leaving the hotel. We check every room we stay in thoroughly to make sure there isn't any infestation.

You have to figure bed bug infestations are probably underreported. I would imagine Disney World or Holiday Inn wouldn't exactly want a lot of publicity on this type of thing. Neither would hospitals, nursing homes, or even Joe Public Homeowner for that matter.

The bedbug infestation is real. I stayed in a nice, clean hotel in Effingham, IL week before last and had three bites the next day. My Mom got two bites in a hotel in Wichita, KS before that.

From my experience, if you go travelling, don't be surprised if you get bitten. Thank goodness I don't think I brought any home with me.

Water temp of 114* will kill bedbugs - so they say.
Dave.

This is a website that reports beg bugs at hotels. Here is the reports from WDW. Bed Bug Report for Walt Disney World Resort, Orlando, FL

The Disney website I hang out on has at least TWO discussions running right now about bed bugs. :D

There is far more discussion about finding bed bugs at WDW on Disney related website than on the bedbugregistry so use the bedgubregistry as a guide. It might be useful to check for those who travel.

Bottom line is to check the room when you first arrive.
