I have the tri star pattern wheel bearing hub covers. On the 135,

How big an opening do I need on a pipe wrench to get these off? Pretty sure the 14in I have is too small.
I hear urban legend of a spanner for this type but see nothing to purchase.

Thanks.

Rightly or wrongly, I've always loosened/tightened them by driving the "star" with short piece of 2x4 and a hammer (like a "spinner" for knock-off wheels). The caps don't secure the wheel to the hub so they just need to be tight enough to stay on. I suppose a hammer with a lead head (i.e. metal softer than the cap) would work too. Hope this helps.

Thanks, I'll give that wood block a try. Then move up to a rag covered - big punch. Or that flat bar tucked away in corner of tool box.
