My neighbor has a bear hibernating under hhis cabin. The bear also managed to open the access door located in the guys pantry and enter the home eating everything including the 50 lbs of dog food he had stored there. The bear did not mch care for the guys furniture either and up ended much of it and then went pooh everywhere before retuning to slumber. He has secured the door underneath but would like it out for fear of damage under the house as well as a few other concerns. He was issued a permit to shoot it by Fish and Game, but would prefer not to go that route. One fellow suggested he pour ammonia under the house through a hole in the floor. Have any of you folks here got any ideas? Thanks, Rat...

What kind of bear is it? Does he know? Grizzlies aren't something to fool with.

Even a black or brown bear can do serious damage if they're riled.

If your friend isn't a hunter, he does want an experienced hunter close by (with an appropriate firearm) just in case. He might want to ask Fish and Game about this...before he tries any type of eviction.

Oh boy what a problem he has. I'm not an authority on the subject and I'm sure your freind wont like what I have to say about it either. Bears can and will keep coming back to a food source, and people need to remember that when they put in cabins or whatever in the forest that they are in natures backyard. You are at that point in there domain, they are not in yours. It seems very odd that fish and game wont tranq the bear and relocate it.

Personally I would locate a wild animal rescue shelter of some sort and go from there. If its in Ca. they got more laws than I can count and would only kill the bear out of fear of death and not lose of property.

My suggestion would be a boombox and some rap at full volume.

I know people call me an old bear and that stuff irritates the bejesus out of me.

On second thought, I'm not so sure you want to really make him mad, you just want him to leave. I guess country will work. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

In our area bears are having their young right about now.
Although the young are very small at this time, tell your buddy to be careful. If this condition exists, momma bears take on a "new disposition". (usually not nice or friendly)
Of course it may be a male.
None the less,I'm suprised the Fish & Game wouldn't tranquilize it and move to a new location ?

If you relocate the bear it will just be a problem for someone else. Now it has learn that cabins have food he it will always be breaking into them for the easy source of food. It pooped all over cause it was marking out it's new teritory, if the cabin owner does not want to shoot the bear then get afriend to do it.

He should call the nearest TV station and tell them the story. If they do come out and do a story on it, the Fish and Game will be out real quick. Sounds like they are trying to pass the buck instead of doing their job.

Rent the cabin out to some bear hunters.. but don't tell them about the bear. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The bear has probably already associated the the cabin w/ food.. even if he is scared off.. he might just come back when hungry. It might be safest to just go ahead and shoot him.. especially if the guy has a family that wants to enjoy the cabin.

If it was me, I'd have a nice new bearskin rug by now. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I think RoyJackson, Deerlope and kensfarm have made some excellent points.

Not knowing the species of the bear, I'd want a buddy as a backup with a large cannon on hand in case it turns out to be an upset grizzly. A black bear is much easier to dispatch. But in any case, I think the logic that the bear has areadly associated that cabin as a food source is an observation that cannot be overlooked, run it off and it will be back later.

Another thought is a professional trapper to cage the animal, but ONLY if the bear is relocated a LONG way away so it won't simply come back for the easy food. I would think Fish & Game might provide that service? The problem with this is that if it is relocated to another area that has a cabin it might just become a pest for that cabin owner. It is unfortunate, but dispatching the bear may be the best long term solution. I'd prefer it be relocated, but sometimes reality dictates otherwise.
