BCS 730
Can anyone tell me the specifics needed to replace an engine on a bcs 730/720? The machines are 2001/2002 vintage. THey currently have a 10hp Kohler and 8 HP Briggs. It is my understanding that the crankshaft is 1" but other than that I am not sure what to look for in a replacement engine...keyed or or tapered shaft, etc...Clearly I have not pulled the engines off yet, but I was hoping that someone might be able to assist. THanks!!

I don't usually offer someone else, but Joel at Earth Tools could probably help you. All I ask is that you remember him when you purchase accessories.

He was very helpful with my purchase. (I received my new BCS just over two weeks ago.)

Hey Domino,

What's wrong with the Briggs and Kohler? If it's a Kohler Magnum, I can't say enough good about it. I had a Magnum 8 on my 715 and have one on my current 730. That is a very, very good engine. You need a 1 inch keyed straight shaft. With the engines currently on them, you SHOULD be able to reuse the clutch and adapter that comes with the 720 and 730, but that depends on what sort of engine you're looking to mount on it. Joel at Earth Tools in Owenton KY is the best source of info, bar none.

Where in Wi are you? I'm 30 minutes north of Madison.

Thanks for all the insight! I am still trying to figure out exactly what the model of the Kohler is on this particular machine. The only way I can currently tell is by the work "Kohler" on the pull cord. The engine was painted blue and haven't been able to locate the model or type on it yet.

As far as what is wrong...I am still trying to figure that out...It doesn't start so I checked the plugs and compression. The compression is low...around 40 and the plugs looked to be in good shape and I checked the gap as well. I haven't done any diagnostics yet to determine if I might have an issue with the rings or the piston yet. I still need to check the filters, valves, and carb yet as well...Nevertheless, I wanted to start down the path of figuring out what I needed in the event of replacing the engine. I would have contacted Joel already, but I don't like asking vendors for equipment help unless I know I am going to purchase from them...I do know that I will be needing a number of other smaller parts that I would get from him, but I am not sure how that will be perceived. Any thoughts?

Another question...I pulled the Kohler engine off to access the clutch. The clutch has a fair amount of rust risidue around the outside. Is that normal? Should the outside of the clutch be greased?

Bill, Do you know a Joel W from Lodi? I am from New London WI.

Hey Domino,

I used to try to "buy local", but the dealers around here have multiple equipment lines and BCS gets neglected. They can sell a cheaper MTD Troy-Bilt a lot easier than a BCS on price alone. When I've ordered parts, it's a call to them, call back to me, call back to them, wait, wait, wait, get the wrong parts, call to them, call back to me, reorder the right parts, wait, wait, wait sorta thing. They mean well, they just don't know the machines. I've been buying exclusively from Joel for about a year now. Anything generic, like bearings and bolts, I still source locally.

Rust around the outside isn't good, but it is common. It's an indicator that the machine was stored outside or in a wet area. If it makes you feel better, you can clean it off with WD-40, but I wouldn't recommend greasing it. The WD-40 will burn off the clutch surfaces, but grease could make it slip bad.

I'm actually a transplant from Lancaster, so I don't know anyone from around here.

Hi! All ! For BCS engines . They are many possibilities. For straight shaft you need adaptor between engine and tranny With straight shaft clutch .They are one for B&S Kohler Yanmar etc and one other for HONDA engine. Flange and bolts pathern are different. Diesel engine as Lombardini ( short taper) bolt direcly on tranny housing but with taper shaft clutch . BCS sold Kit Good luck ! Oldmech
