have a BCS with the splined coupler on the pto. when tilling it jumps out of gear(coupler pops off). it looks like the shaft on the tiller is damaged--the splines are worn and the coupler is worn too. has anyone fixed this problem before?

Hi Schlen,

Do you have quick couplers on this? If so, replace the quick coupler tang or put in a new shaft - part#564.43813. Otherwise, I repaired the PTO on my 715. It's not terribly difficult. You drive out a spring pin on the engagement lever and two spring pins on the slider lever inside the PTO housing.

Take a look at the parts diagram link I provided - page 16, part 19, slider part #564.43164 and slide lever part #523.43168 I didn't replace the slide lever but had a local shop weld a bead on it and I ground it smooth again.

Also, depending on the model number of your tiller, you have either an internal(67962 and older) or external(67963 and newer) ball bearing and spring for locking the PTO. The internal lock was a less effective design. The spring and ball bearing could be worn to the point that it doesn't hold. Even if they don't look shot, replace them. They're cheap and you're gonna be in there anyway.

As far as the tiller, You have to tear it completely apart and replace an 80 dollar shaft. There are a couple shafts for different pre95 tillers and you'll need to determine which one you need. You should also replace the bearings and seals while you're in there. The bearing on the left side is a real SOB to get out. I had to break it and use a cutoff wheel to make a spot to drive it out with a chisel. If you need tines as well, it may be a better deal to buy a whole 'nother tiller box. I don't have a link for you to look at a parts diagram. I'm looking at it on the BCS cd-rom offered by John at the BCS shop

I have a 735 with the splined PTO and over the past 20 years, I've replaced the coupling twice and last year I visited Joel at Earthtools and got another coupler and engaging fork, I also got the 3" PTO extension and attached it to the tiller. The extension has the female splined end that stays engaged to the tiller and on the other end that attaches to the tractor has a new male sllines that the coupler engages. Joel said that was the easiest and cheapest route to solve the worn splines on the tiller that was causing it to wear the coupler and start jumping out of gear.

thanks Bill-very informative my local dealer was worthless. I have another tiller box I guess I could use so I'll just fix the coupler. you probably saved me a couple of hours and maybe a broken part from trying to get er apart.

milkman--thanks how does that extension affect the balance with tiller in your opinion good or bad?

I used it last fall a couple of times and I haul it to the garden in a trailer that I pull behind the BCS. When I lift the tiller out of the trailer, I did notice that it is heavier, but I had a bad shoulder then, but when using it, I liked it setting back that three inches, when the tiller was digging deep in the ground, the engine is not quite at such a steep angle. My BCS is over 21 yrs old and still has the original engine and I often wondered if there was a problem with lubrication with the engine at the steep angle when tilling deep, I guess there's not, but I feel better about it.

RE: BCS605 spline drive

1. Are there any PTO adjustments to get that slider [part number 564.43164] to move farther toward the implement? My slider only engages the implement shaft 9/32" When fully extended the slider wobbles on the end of the PTO shaft. It will not drive my tiller or my mower. Do these symptoms indicate that the slider and slide lever [part number 523.43168]should be replaced?

2. Page 06.00 [BCS605 GEARS], "Some of these units in this serial number range may have been updated to the 25mm PTO shaft & 3 dog coupler. See page 06.01 for parts".

3. Have you considered moving to 3 dog couplers? How many hours have you run your machine between slider replacement?

I would appreciate hearing your comments. Thanks!!
