I have an BCS 850 that is a great Machine until carb corn oil fowling.
I had a service shop clean it up and get ready for garden.
They called and said my clutch was stuck but did not know much about it.
I told them it was a cone clutch and put it in a vice to unstick and they looked up internet and found data.

PROBLEM: Got Machine back and the tractor clutch operates backwards ????
That is when clutch and safety lever is locked in -> Machine operates engaged when starting.
Release the clutch to engaged position and machine disengages.
Need to start in Neutral gear.

DEFINITION: When clutch lever compressed tractor gears engage,
clutch lever released to drive position - drive gear disengages.

Needed to use tractor anyway - no time to pull tractor apart
Now when the tractor is driving there is no PTO operation for tiller.

Is it possible to have the internal clutch levers backward??
This is a mystery I need to solve, squash vines starting to run and need to till between the rows now.

I'm stumped. There's just no way to make the clutch work opposite, except maybe having the cable so tight that the clutch is disengaged with the lever engaged. The cable should be loose enough at the clutch to allow you to easily move it 1/2" side to side. Also, lift the rubber boot and look down the hole with a flashlight. They may have the clutch throwout bearing shield end oriented wrong. The shift fork should be nested into the throwout bearing shield. See link. Now that I think on it, I'll bet that's the problem. They have the shield oriented wrong, but shoved it together anyway.

The PTO problem can't be related to the clutch problem without the forward motion being affected. All power transfers through the clutch, whether it's going to the PTO or the wheels. Take the tiller off and see if the PTO is turning. Hopefully they didn't go into the transmission and mess something up in there. Might be time to find another shop...

I worked on it yesterday
They broke off the bolt on the cable crimp for clutch lever, I had to grind that off.
Got the Boot off and the clutch lever was over the tabs of Cone Clutch (not on top).
Way to much tension on cable
(I compared with the link at earth Tool Yesterday Thanks for your reply though)
Why it works backwards I do not know???
Or why do the Tiller tines not rotate if power is going to the wheels.
Once I released the Cable - Clutch lever snapped forward
Started Machine (Blocked up) wheels rolled and tiller tines operated after engaging lever.
Now I am going to tear it apart and put it together right, I hope they did not break anything putting it together this way.

With the shield being wrong, the cable was so tight, it may have seemed like it was working opposite. What was really happening was the clutch fork held the clutch disengaged even with lever released. When you squeezed the clutch lever, the fork shoved the throwout bearing into the clutch cone so hard that it bound up, giving the impression that the clutch was engaged.

The clutch fork could be bent, and the cable has likely been stretched, your throwout bearing's life could be shortened. I doubt it has caused any damage beyond that, and whether it causes a problem in the future is unlikely. You didn't run it that long after discovering the problem. They sure should have noticed the problem when they test ran it. I would definitely tell the shop that you're unhappy with their work. How they handle your complaint will determine if you go back again.
