YM2210
Does anyone know what the proper size battery is for the YM2210? My new (to me) tractor cranks slowly even when the battery is fully charged and the engine is hard to start. The battery which came with the tractor looks almost new but doesn't fill the cavity in front of the radiator. From measurements of the outside of it, it may be a U1, which is rated at 33 AH. Do you suppose that battery is intended for a lawn tractor?

Any thoughts?

Probably group 27 is the largest that you can put into it.

But just get the biggest battery you can fit. Measure the compartment and go to your choice of battery store and measure them and make sure they fit.

I have a group 27 in my ym2000 .

Are you cranking with the compression released, then dropping the lever after you have it spinning? That way the inertia of the flywheel assists the starter, instead of resisting it.

Sure, lots of thoughts.... In wet cell batteries, there is no downside to going to a larger width and length battery as long as it will fit the battery mount. The voltage stays the same, you just get more amperage available with the larger battery.

Our old YM165D came with a group 24 battery. When battery time came around I enlarged the battery box to fit a Group 27 battery - which not only has more capacity but tends to be a less expensive & more common battery.

In the process I noticed that the old battery was a wet cell type and was often wet on top - the wetness is acid of course.... not good... That acid had several times gotten blown around the area and caused some corrosion.
So I made sure that the new battery I bought was a sealed AGM type. Slightly more expensive, but it has got to be better for the radiator.

Speaking of the radiator....while you are looking around that area of the tractor, Yanmar's older tech bulletins were concerned that the radiator be kept clean with good air flow. They even had a dealer's program to make sure that there was proper stuffing between the radiator shell and the shroud around the radiator fan. The stuffing was just foam rubber with a sticky side but wedged in there to make sure that the air flow was through the radiator fins and not just sneaking in between radiator and fan shroud.

I just replaced mine. The Yausa 95D31R Ernie put in it when I bought the tractor lasted almost 14 years to the day. I replaced it with a NAPA group 31 950 cca battery which fit with no problem, just had to modify the hold down a little bit. Hope the new battery gives me the same service.

Good luck. I haven't had a battery last that long. Seems like they don't last as long now as they did 10 years ago.

What kind of battery did you get? Sealed AGM or flooded cell type? Fourteen years would be exceptional out here, although I've had new Optima Red tops go 12 years quite often.

BTW, that's just the red top version; Optima's blue and yellow top are lucky to last their warranty - not that they have ever made good on the warranty - So I've quit trying those.

I still run the old style flooded cell batteries in about half the machines we have. Which style I choose is usually based on what kind of corrosion I'm willing to put up with in the battery area. But even those old flooded cell types are lasting ten years now. That's at least twice as long as they did back in the 70s/80s/90s.

Feb.2008 and it still holding 12.50 after sitting for close to 3Wks.. I do know It's only 650cca. I'm on my 3rd replacement in my 2001 pickup truck which I purchased new. When it does go down I won't or can't complain that much............

I had to go check my Specs. I was kind of surprised group 34 only 550cca. It's a Deka534MF Sealed. I was really surprised only 550. I never had any problems with it so never really paid much Attn. to it. wrote it down so I know what to look for when or "if" it does go out. I'm going to have to try and find a dealer local because it looked Exceptionally in great shape!!!
