Hi,
I have a JD 3010 gasoline that i am having some problems with. First off the battery will not charge. I have replaced the battery and still have to jump start it every time. even hooked up to a truck with jumper cables it takes forever to get it started. I have tried for over and hour before i could get it to start. Is there something i am doing wrong? second the pto no longer works. I can easily turn the pto with my hand and it will not engage when i try it. there are no grinding or whining noises it doesnt do anything. The battery and starting problem is my biggest issue as i cannot get hay to the livestock if i dont have the tractor running. any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

Kyle

You've changed the battery, but still have the same problem, so it's likely that the generator isn't working. (that model tractor should have a generator, not an alternator)
You can verify that the next time you have it running. After you finish putting out the hay, with the engine still running, remove the negative battery cable. If it dies, it's not charging. If that's the case, I suggest that you replace it with a Delco, internally regulated, alternator. Should be able to find one at a salvage yard. Also, if there is a local alternator/starter rebuilder, he should be able to sell you one.

Another possibility is that something is drawing current after you shut it off. Again, you can remove the negative battery cable while it's not in use, and see if that helps.

Either way, can you park it close enough to an electrical outlet and connect a battery charger? That would probably get you by until you can fix it.

About the PTO problem. Could be several things. But, most likely, it's either the PTO clutch or the linkage that operates it. (that one has the hand lever on the console, right?)

Yes the hand lever for the pto is on the left side of the console. How difficult is an alternator change?

Nothing to it just reconnect the wires and you got it.I think there was two bolts if I remember right.
