Every home I have been in, that has a bathroom ventilation fan, the fan sounds like a jet engine,,

Heck I think the ideal thing would be for the motor element of the fan to be mounted 10 feet from the bathroom,
preferably near the exhaust,, to minimize noise.

So, does someone sell a quiet ventilation fan? Or do I gotta start sourcing parts, (such as a Grainger blower) and DIY a quite system?

HELP!!

:confused3:

Maybe my brain is a bit fried.... but when i was looking at all sorts of stuff for my house, 25 years ago, there was something called a "Zome" number. Or something like that. It basically told you how quiet the thing was. I can't find any reference to a Zome anything right now. But back then, an item, like florescent lights, and dish washers, use to list a loudness number. And my failing memory, remembers this as a zome value.

Not in my house there isn't!. They all sound like a jet engine with the turbine bearing going out on some of them.!.

BUT, I have hears some really quiet ones. In some of the home depots or lowes, you can play with various ones before you buy them in a display. Some have a low sone rating. Yes they are rated in sones as a unit of measurement of how quiet they are. BUT I found that the expensive ones tended to be more quiet and the cheap ones tended to have that turbojet installed in them. I have seen some of the really good low noise ones go for close to $200. I suppose you get what you pay for. :)

Panasonic seems to have the market on quiet fans. I haven't installed one but I have two friends that raved about them. Not cheap but if low noise is what you're looking for... check them out. On my list when I remodel our master bath.

Sone is the term you are looking for.

Yeah and how does that relate to dB's? I'm too lazy tonight to look it up. :newhere:

Excuse me......butt. When I turn on my bathroom fan - last thing I'm worried about - how loud it is. K0UA must have purchased his fan from the same supplier as I did. Sounds like the jet engine on a Fighting Falcon - white hot bearings & throwing fan blades.

Folks wonder why there is a seat belt on my throne. If they turn on the fan.... all questions are answered.

Thanks guys!!

Sones are a linear measurement, like a tape measure,
double the sones, the sound is twice as loud,,
dB is an exponential measurement,,

1 sone is supposed to be the sound of a quiet room , Panasonic has one fan that is rated at 0.3 sones,, and 150 CFM,,
it uses 6 inch duct,,
Hmmmmmmmmmmm :confused2:
At 0.3 sones, it must take away noise from a quite room,,,
