Barter value FEL work vs. drywall hanging?

I've always done my own drywall work however, since I prefer seat time to ladder time, I am currently considering a barter deal. I know what my tractor time is worth, but what's a reasonable price to pay per sheet or sq/ft for hanging 4'x12'x5/8" ceiling and 54"x12'x1/2" wallboard (9' wall height). This would be labor only (materials supplied) for hanging, taping and finish mudding? I realize this will likely vary based on the locality, but am also curious to see if there is a generally accepted 'national standard' price, so to speak. Thanks in advance.

I HATE DRYWALL!!!

I'd sooner give up my first born male son than do drywall!!! If it was me, I'd be working for that guy for many a weekend.

I SECOND THAT!!!!

It's a task I absolutely dread. And to top it off, during my most recent bathroom remodel I used the new "mold proof" drywall. The stuff has fiberglass in it and it makes you itch worse then after installing insulation. Lets see, hot, dusty, heavy, frustrating and itchy

I have a guy at my place today doing the tape, bedding and texturing. It's well worth the $500 he's charging. I wish I could have paid him to hang the sheets too.

Thanks guys, I've pretty much gotten my fill of drywall work over the years too. I guess that helps explains why the job keeps getting put off, lol. Was just hoping somebody here might be in the trade and able to put an approximate $ number on the labor side so I can barter fairly. Anyone?

OMG, Gettin' ta swap playin' around (uh, sorry 'bout that, make that WORKIN') on thuh trakter instedd'a luggin' and tapin' that gypsum! I'd jump at that swap anytime. On the other side, tho, I dunno how many gonn'a volunteer ta take the other end'a the deal.

Talk about drywall! I lost my roof in a storm in may. I was rehanging rock the day after school got out. I was on my last piece of rock on the ceiling and it wouldn't fit just right. I was doing it by my self and I gave the rock a yank while holding it over my head. I heard a tear that sounded like clothes tearing, but the pain in my arm told me where it was at. I tore the mussle in my right forarm where it weets the elbow tendon, trying to shift that rock. You talk about pain. But being the stuborn old cuss I am, I got a screw in that last sheet of rock before I colapsed. That happened June 1. I still haven't floated it out yet. It's been a long recovery period and it's going to be a while longer. MP

I'll second that. Here's how much I hate drywall, mud, painting and wallpaper, I have a 3000 sq ft house and a 1000 sq ft garage and there isn't a single piece of exposed drywall in the place, (5/8" firewall between the house and garage, under a layer of knotty pine. I even used 2x6 v-grove pine for the ceilings. I've done lots of drywall and still do a house every year for friends or with habitat for humanity, but I will not have the stuff in my house....

jeez, with all the member diversity on this site I figured for sure somebody was hanging board for a living? Ah well, it was worth a try.

I have an estimate for drywall labor on the house I am fixing to build and its less than $1 per square feet of living area.

Why not just call a couple of local drywall guys and get quotes?

I'm in the home improvement biz and I'm not aware of a national standard price - everything is specific to a geography. A guy hanging wall in TX or CA (using inexpensive immigrant or even illegal labor) will be in a very different price point than your neighborhood.

I've never had much success with barter arrangements. Seems one guy is over valuing his work and undervaluing the others.
