Re: Barbed wire and saw chains don\'t mix!!! :(

Yep, too many fences were built many years ago by just stapling the wire to trees, and now that wire's deeply embedded in the trees.

Railroad spikes and lumber mill saws don't mix either. Bloody bloomin tree huggers /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

I spent a good bit of time on Thursday straightening the bar on my saw after it was run over by a tractor. The bucket is a great place to carry tools so long as you remember they're there.

Saw chains and 16 penny or pole barn nails don't go to well either.

Don't ask me how I know.

I was on a project that required the removal of some $$trees. I was surprised when the logger rejected some very nice ones because of a black stain in the cut base. Seems the stain comes from metal somewhere in the tree.

Re: Barbed wire and saw chains don\'t mix!!! :(

I hit a 10 penny nail smack in the middle of a big butternut (3' diameter). That had to have been put in when it was a sapling. Bad thing was that I hit it during the back cut when falling it. Had to whittle at cutting the rest of the way until it fell.

A few years ago a neighbor asked me to remove a locust where the top had broke off in a windstorm. It was in a very straight line of trees and looked suspiciously like an old lot line. I spotted very faint signs that looked like a 3 wire fence had been fastened to it at one time. Smart me, I cut 6" above the top faint mark. Hit a nail! /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Like 'em or not, tree huggers are environmentalists. The ones who spike trees are domestic terrorists. There is a big difference. Lumping the terrorists in with the genuine evironmentalists gives the terrorists cover. Please don't do that.

So am I. Just because I grow and harvest trees for a living doesn't change that fact. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I (and the company I work for) make decisions based on "sustainable yield", meaning that overall harvest is based on the amount of wood growing, so that there will be a viable supply of wood and decent jobs now, and in the future.
I prefer to refer to treehuggers as "Preservationists." /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

"Environmentalist; someone who works to protect the environment from destruction or pollution"

Correct me if I'm wrong, but that describes most everyone who owns their land and purchases a tractor to improve and enhance their ownership. Are you willingly going to degrad or

destroy your land? Or do you strive to improve it?
( Tree huggers, environmentalists, domestic terrorists. Tis a fine line. A fair number of folks would put them all in the same barrel. Also, seems anyone claiming to be one of those three would also claim to be two of those three. Which two? You'll never know.
)

All right, I see your point. I'm on vacation this week and I confess I did hug a lot of trees today... about 2 cords worth as I wrapped choker chains around them to drag them out to the road. And 'tis true, that did make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside... not only because of the check I'll be getting from the mill, /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif but because after thinning, and cutting all the dying trees my woodlot will be a lot healthier. (5-10 years from now, I'll do it again!!!)

My point being that the term embraces a wide range. As long as man is a/the dominant feature of the landscape we're going to have an impact. An environmentalist (by my definition) will try to make that impact a positive one. JMHO, but those who don't believe we should leave any footprints at all are better defined as "preservationists."

Re: Barbed wire and saw chains don\'t mix!!! :(

Sorry to hijack the thread.

I try and improve my land but the environmentalists try and stop me with rules meant to preserve the natural environment. The terms are so broad and include good and bad. Some amount of environmentalism is necessary to keep our air safe to breathe, too much of it and we aren't allowed to alter the face of the earth at all. The happy medium is where I would like to be, there is some value in protecting the land. We all have a little tree hugger in us. A little evil too.

Chainsaws and barbed wire. If I could just keep the dirt away from my chains I would have a much better time cutting wood.

Highbeam, I know just what you're saying. Up here we have an area of large tracts of privately owned land known as "The North Maine Woods; for 400 years it has been logged extensively and repeatedly, yet still creates jobs for many people. It also has been and still is accessible for many other recreational activities. Yet there is now a Massachussetts based coalition which wants to "Save the Maine Woods" by creating a national park.
Then there's "Wolf Restoration"; they want to bring the gray wolf back into Maine. Just one trouble though... there never were grays here. What used to dwell here was the red wolf...

So we introduce an exotic species, which is always a crap shoot with regard to what problems that causes; and it'll be protected by the Endangered Species Act, despite the fact they're hunted in other states. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Sorry, these people don't care about the environment; it's all about control.
